Compulsive gambling is an urge or addiction to gamble despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop. A preferred term among many professionals is problem gambling, as few people described by the term experience true compulsions in the clinical sense of the word. Problem gambling often is defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others rather...

and i work in a casino... i am in fact the dealer.
I banned myself from where i work, and my job forces me to be a hypocrite. I cant gamble myself... i could have gone to college, had a real job that i enjoyed, be traveling the world by now... but i got caught up in the gambling industry. now i cant find another job for the same pay. its all i can do for now. but its hard, trying not to gamble, while you are hoping that that person wins, or buys back in to give you one more chance to give him/her the jackpot so you have a paycheck. we work for tips. nearly all of the hourly goes to taxes. you do not get commission, you do not get a yearly bonus, you get nothing, not even medical. small town casinos dont offer such things anymore. you have to rely on your people skills, and gambling is a very personal business. if you smile wrong, people think you are laughing at them losing, if you ask how they are today, it can be an insult because obviously they dont have alot of chips in front of them and how stupid of you for asking. i try to say maybe it will get better, they say easy for you to say, its not your money.
and in my head i know exactly how they feel, and know that i spend more or the same as them. i cant get away from it. i will not be allowed to gamble at work now in the pit, but i will still have to see it, know their feelings, see the sickness surrounding me every day.
i wish i didnt have to rely on this job, i wish it could just be a side job.
cause in all honesty, for what it is, the money is good. not benefits, but you hardly work really, and 20 min breaks every hour. but its so mentally/spiritually draining. sure, sometimes it can be fun, if you are paying, making tips, and everyone is having a good time.
but then there are the days where everyone is in a bad mood, win lose or draw... and they feel that you are there for them to take it out on. i got called fat one week, ugly the next, and i am neither.
i laughed about it, but little comments get old. i wish i could leave work at work, and come home and relax. but most my time is spent thinking about gambling myself, or work. even when i try to sleep. and if it was a bad day, well the mood carries on. I HATE GAMBLING.
i hate gamblers. i was never so mean as some of our customers are.
if you dont have something nice to say then shut up. im a real person... i have a problem to, and i cant just ban myself and stay away and work on my recovery, i have to work, and see it everyday.
its very hard to be on both sides of the fence. and one side is so different from the other.

I'm surprised you are allowed to gamble at all. I'm in PA and they recently legalized gambling within the past two years. If you work there, you can't play anywhere in the state, it's against the law. Not just at their casino, but ANYWHERE. So they basically have to go to Atlantic City or NY, which is quite a trip. I've made friends with several of the slot attendants and waitresses and have listened to some of their horror stories about some of the patrons. People can be down right mean sometimes. Table games were just approved and starting up next month, can't wait to see the drunken morons at those tables...

oh, in our state, its not only allowed, its ENCOURAGED. by industry tournaments and match plays and drink offers, if you work in the industry, they will give you extra things, to come gamble. and there are SOOOO many casinos around here. one just shut down, but there were about 5 within an hour drive. and an hour ferry ride away? even more. everywhere you look here.i know someone who just moved out here, that i met on this site, and she was surprised at the amount of casinos around. more cardrooms i should say. not so much slots.

Right now, it is really hard to be postive in 'our situation'. But as our treatment or recovery progresses, I have faith that we can find a steady balance between work and off time. When we walk in the door, just try to remember we are working for our paychecks-and we're not going to eo and play to try and make up for a crappy day at work. We need to be strong, and think about constructive things to do with our time and money. Just think if we don't gamble for even just three months-we could have a vacation!!!
Dracona
oh yes... vacation.... sounds great. im exited
