Coupons to often. The reason for me not using them is because it can make me spend money on something I wasn't considering buying until I saw that coupon.
This is a true story about a friend who got a coupon and ended up costing him and his wife a fair amount of money.

In our community about twice a year the local TV station has a fund-raiser for different charities. A lot of the fundraising is done by on-line bids or auctions or outright purchases.
One such purchase was a coupon to a highly respected Mexican restaurant. The deal was a $50 coupon for the price of $25. The only string attached was that the coupon had to be used in full. So if you went there, you had to purchase $50 worth of food or you lose the balance of the coupon.
So my friend and his wife went to the restaurant on a Friday night and ordered their meal and ordered some extra goodies to take home. At the end of the night they went up to the cashier and showed them their coupon. They were told that the coupon was only valid between Sunday through Thursday. So they paid their $50 bill and took their coupon home.
A couple of weeks later, they decided to go up to the restaurant on a Sunday evening and have a nice meal. Again, they ordered their meals and went to pay and were told that the coupon was only good between noon to 2 PM on Sunday's.
They paid their bill and went home. This restaurant is a good 40 mile round trip from their home and so far they have spent over $100 on food, plus the original cost of $25 for the coupon, plus the gas to get there... and they still haven't used their coupon.

My point is that if they didn't see the ad for this coupon they wouldn't have went to that restaurant. That coupon didn't save them anything... in fact, it just cost them. And to me, that is the idea behind coupons, to make us spend money.
