This community is for people who are struggling to meet financial obligations of any kind. So, we got Sydney's test results back and it turns out his problem is anemia due to fleas! i looked up "flea anemia" on the internet. It is a real condition and can be fatal, especially for kittens, puppies and older pets.
I try to keep up with flea treatments for my cats, but as those of you with financial struggles know, it can be difficult. I had stopped giving Sydney flea treatments over the winter because I wasn't "seeing" any fleas but they were there, wreaking their havoc with his health!
Please, if you have pets, and can do nothing much else for them do try to keep them flea-free. There are many treatments out there--of course the most expensive (Frontline/Advantage) are best but there are cheaper ones (I do NOT recommend Sergeant's Gold after I read it poisoned some pets though!) Look on the internet for a good deal. I also heard Costco is planning to start selling "Frontline" type treatment under its Kirkland brand for $20 a package! :)

I've been struggling lately on what to do with my life since I no longer have a caregiver role. I decided to write a list of hobbies and things I like to do as a reminder to myself. Luke wasn't as active and not eating as much as normal, but husband and I figured he was just slowing down due to age (12 yrs). Very quickly, he lost LOTS of weight, so I took him to the vet on a Friday afternoon. That visit cost $249 for the exam, tests and meds. Came to find out the heartworm preventative is less than $9/mo. But by that time, Luke wasn't eating or drinking, couldn't keep the antibiotics, diuretics and heart meds down. Rather than watch him die of dehydration, Monday I took him in to have him put to sleep.
It is hard at times to keep up with a pet's health when you are struggling financially. But a little knowledge and searching for deals and alternatives can help a lot.

1--garlic powder (NOT garlic salt) mixed into Sydney's food. Fleas hate garlic.
2-if you have some citrus at home, save the peeling. Simmer in water (which makes the house smell nice), then let this cool. Remove peels and strain. Pour the liquid into an inexpensive spray bottle (fleas hate citrus, too).
