Well, was out at ER bright and early today for a shot. Lovenox. I will be out there every 12 hours for another shot until Tuesday morning. That is when my tooth will be removed.

I couldn't have it pulled while on Warfarin but I can't stop taking it either because of my heart valve.

So, I am coming off the Warfarin for three days but the Lovenox will keep the blood thin enough until the tooth is pulled.

So, while some of this will be covered by insurance as my deductible has been met, I will still owe about $500... so time to start saving for this bill and this doesn't include the dentist bill.

Still hoping not to dip into savings to pay for everything...

seems interesting that any other blood thinner would be ok....but I am not a doctor and not a dentist either...they know their business and you know your money...so good job on this one...hugs

Here is an analogy I use when trying to explain it to people. I use a car engine.

Let's say you can hear one of your piston's banging around (tooth.) You take it to the mechanic (dentist) and he says it can be fixed but he needs another persons opinion (doctor.) The mechanic says the only way to fix the piston (tooth) is to remove all the oil from the engine for three days and he can do it.

The second person (doctor) says this won't work because by removing the oil, the engine will seize. He suggests to remove the oil (stop taking Warfarin) but to inject a fluid that has a quick lube effect but only lasts for 12 hours (Lovenox.)

On the third day, all the original oil (Warfarin) is out of the body and if they time it right, the special lube (Lovenox) will be low enough to fix the piston (tooth.)

You see, my heart valve is artificial, it needs to always be kept lubricated. If not it can seize in an open position which would create blood clots or aneurisms or it could seize in the close position creating a heart attack.

Everything needs to be perfectly timed. I had two shots Sunday and will have two Monday. I haven't had Warfarin for three days. Tomorrow morning (Tuesday) I will get the tooth pulled and in the evening have another shot and start back with Warfarin, then Wednesday morning one final shot and hopefully everything will be back to normal.

This was part of the dilemma with my hospital stay with my colon. My blood needed to be thick enough to have a colonoscopy, so as soon as that was done they operated within the hour. Then a half hour after surgery my tummy was being injected with Lovenox.
