Taken hostage by the English, a French kin gwas ransomed, returned to France then.... toward end of his life he inexplicably GAVE HIMSELF UP as a hostage again. He died in English custody. WTH?
Turns out he was possibly a bit wonky, but with inbred monarchs, who wasn't? I mean, those aren't family trees, tbhose are family Jenga matches.
King Jean le bon (the good) felt that his son Louis's escape from English custody was dishonorable and he took his son's place. Chivalry? Maybe. Great way to kick the shitstorm to his son Charles (Charles V)?? Definitely!!
If you want an idea of how crazy things got, try this: Cecily Neville was descended from the House of Lancaster, married the Duke of York, parented and garndparented and great-grandparented every monarch thereafter except Henry VII (the first Tudor) and her husband was his own cousin, because his ancestors were siblings.

Fascinstingly, the mess gets worse in Europe's mainland, where thanks to intermarriage, the King of England (Ed3) could claim the French throne via his mother (lately married to his father Ed2, daughter of the French King Philip 4). So could Philip of Valois, who was a grandson of Philip 3 of France, nephew of Philip 4, and the cousin of three other French kings. Confused yet? Wait till you read this: Thanks to marriages, the House of Valois also claimed Burgundy, Angouleme, and Orleans by various means, not to mention Alencon and Anjou. In a century where nationalism was finally digging into France? Kinda kings by default of owning the most and being related to the most!
Fun fact: If Edward 3 of England had been a wiser man, we could've skipped the Hundred Years' War, which led to much crime in between battles, since they'd taken to hiring mercenaries. Unemployed mercenaries bad.
And allt hat in that same century as bubonic plague and a massive famine, and almost a month being shaved off the growing season by a shift in climate that occurred over decades. Which is, btw, possible.

Just back from work. A short break and I have to leave again. Tomorrow will be pretty much the same schedule but I don't have a late afternoon call because my clients are due back late tomorrow morning.
I just got my water bill which is once again completely out of hand even though we have not watered a damn thing this year other than the dogwood tree once. Trying to keep up with things is getting to be impossible. I'm tired of trying...
We had rain this morning. Not enough but it was a slow and steady downpour off and on this morning. I hope that we get some more later today.

Partner is redoing the front suspension on his truck. Crisis du jour - he broke a tool and a part. Both of which are essential to complete the job. I barely got out of my car and he launched a full description of everything that he's done and what happened. My brain is already fried. That I did not need. We ordered the part and tool. Tomorrow his buddy is coming over to help him get an essential Honda nut that he somehow lost yesterday in the garage. It flew off of his air tool and he can't find it anywhere. I need my car for work.
