Sorry Leo, I'm hijacking check in for today, but I have a good reason. And it's back to you tomorrow, I promise. I posted yesterday afternoon, I spoke to the smoke kittens foster mom yesterday and that went well, she and I hit it off. She was a little hesitant about my application initially (totally fair) but read what I wrote about Koshka and thought I'm definitely "one of us"-AKA people in the animal who tend to have a bunch of animals because there are just so many that need homes. I also mentioned Miki and treating her for heartworm etc. So I'm picking up Wool,which is his current name and what I'll call him on here until I settle on a name, on Saturday morning. Luckily the drive is only like 90 minutes, so I have to get up early but not earlier than I get up to run. Also it turns out he's a bargain...his adoption fee including transport from AL to RI is only $170. It's rare to find a kitten around here for under $300. Which is still very worth it, even neutering a cat is more than that. She said she should probably charge more but it would mean fewer adoptions, and already there's not enough room at the shelters and rescues for all the animals that need help. I know that's true across the south, and that's why it's become so common to transport animals north. He'll be my third southern adoption-Miki and Skadi are both from Mississippi. And since I know they're struggling money wise, I'm going to bring some food, treats and stuff to donate when I pick him up. It's the least I can do, really. 

I spent a lot of time yesterday coming up with ideas for a name and I think I've settled on one, but I never consider it a final decision until I've met them. Not sure why really since they aren't necessarily based on personality (last 3 I adopted weren't very socialized so I wouldn't know that for a while), but it has to "feel right " when I say it. I started off looking for names that mean "smoke" because like Haco, I was looking for that fur color, and then just followed the internet rabbit hole until I had a few good options. I want something unique, fairly easy to say and spell, fairly masculine sounding, and I need to like the meaning. The name I think I'm going with is Karrick. It's an Australian aboriginal word meaning "smoke." I also like that it has ties to Miki's name, which is also an Australian aboriginal word that means "moon." A smoke cat and a blue cattle dog are essentially opposite coat colors...the cat is a white undercoat and a black topcoat, and the dog is a black undercoat and white topcoat. But at least until Saturday, he's Wool.

And now, the reason I posted this in the first place: kitten photo! Not a great photo since it's a picture of his listing on my iPad but it's still cute. I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs something adorable to get through the day...we have basically hired a new doctor and she's coming in to shadow the boss today. Ultimately this is a good thing, but that's never stopped my anxiety and it's not about to start. Especially when the manager told me last night to try to keep Karen "in line." I just laughed, we both know how that's gonna go, but I'll do what I can. We just want to make a positive impression and show her how we do things, not how Karen thinks we should.
