Vitamin D deficiency

I have suffered with fibromyalgia for over 13 years and not until I came across my current doctor was I ever checked for vitamin D deficiency. Since starting treatment with high doses of vitamin D, my pain has gradually decressed. I asked him why no other doctor has ever checked me for this deficiency and he explained that the research is there that vitamin D deficiency causes the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Within a year of having gastic bypass surgery I started to have the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It turns out that many other people who have this surgery experience the same issue due to not being able to absorb nutrients. In addition, we spend less and less time outside as a society which also contributes to lower vitamin D levels. I wanted to address this problem and the results to see if others have had the same issue and/or could others benefit by having their vitamin D level checked. Also, low vitamin D level affects Calcium levels as well. Years of suffering and needless medicines could have been avoided for me if any one of the many doctors I saw did this simple test. I hope this post will help others.

I was also deficient in Vitamin D, and I've come to learn that this is a very common symptom among those of us with fibro. When my doctor prescribed 50,000 IU's of Vitamin D, one per week, I immediately noticed some increased energy. But once my level got to within the normal range, I no longer noticed the increased energy like I had when I went from deficient to a major boost at 50,000 IU's. However, at no time did the Vitamin D help with my pain associated from fibro. I now maintain my D level with 2000 IU's daily and continue to have the level checked twice a year with my other blood work.

I'm so happy that you have found some relief, and I definitely agree that everyone should have their Vitamin D level checked during blood testing.

Yes, very common. I just went through my 2nd round of prescription and my test came in today at 15. I'm lower than after the last round of prescription.

Normal is 30 - 100

My husband had gastric bypass surgery and his blood levels are checked regularly as a part of his after-care, which will continue for the rest of his life.

I can't imagine why your blood levels weren't monitored regularly after your surgery, as the surgery creates a malsbsorption issue by design, which must be addressed by supplementation of many if not most nutrients, including Vitamin D.

I also tested low and it made a minor difference in my pain, but that definitely was not my major issue, just something that could be addressed and was taken care of.

Im on 50,000 Ius of D because I live in Washington state. We dont get much sun here. My Dr. told me to go outside at least 15 min. a day even if its cloudy. It will help.

I am so happy that others have been finding relief from some of the symptoms by taking vitamin D! :) I wish I would have been helped years ago. So many medicines and doctors and years of suffering could have been avoided. This condition even affected my relationships and career. But, better late than never.

I've been treated with mega doses of D twice over the past couple years, but unfortunately no improvement for me. :o( I Hope it helps you, as it seems to for some people! :o)

Hi to all. I was found to have a vitamin D deficiency as well. (among other abnormal blood work). I currently take 16,000 ius daily. I think adressing the vitamin d issue is only a piece of the puzzle. I am on a ton of other supplements as well for various issues relating to fibro, and I think they all work together because my symptoms did not improve with just the vitamin d alone.

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
