I first took it after wrist surgery when my doc thought I was ready to come off narcs. Amazing med!
I started it with fibro as needed and it helped at first, now nothing. I know we all respond differently to meds, but this is the strangest one for me. I really had high hopes about this one, too. :(
It used to work for me as you described. I had almost no pain. But after being on it for so long, it doesn't work as well anymore.
As someone else stated, Tramadol can definitely cause dependency. And the withdrawal effects are awful. I've weaned off it in the past and it was very difficult for me!
As far as the insomnia, I did have that in the beginning of my treatment with it. I wonder if it's possible that because you didn't sleep at night, you had more pain during the day and the tramadol didn't work as well because your pain levels were higher?
I hope you can get that same pain relief again. It's wonderful to find something that actually helps!
Even with both these drugs, I am still in pain and, if I stand up or walk for more than about 5 minutes, my hips and legs are in agony!!! So I have to lie down for a few minutes, then try to fight the fatigue I have to get back up and do another 5 minutes of work. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with. I feel like I climb out of the Grand Canyon, several times, every day and I know what I'm talking about. Before the fibro got me, I did hike in and out of the GC. It's not easy and neither is having fibro.
There is a lot of controversy about how opiod medications effect pain in FMS patients. They go on and on about addiction/dependence/etc.
Now, I have to say that I am 62 years old, so that factors in to my take on this, but as far as I'm concerned, I would just like to be out of pain entirely, even if for only one day. I know that achieving this is a walk on a tight-rope. If you take too much opiod medication, you fall asleep or feel drunk. If you don't take enough, well, you're still in pain. I know for sure that I could come closer to a level where I could be able to do more and still avoid the attempt to try to be totally pain-free.
My pain is kind of level, day and night, so long as I lie down all the time, so maybe, if I were to try that and I was up and about, the pain would become less even and I'd have trouble managing the meds. I have even talked to the doctor about damaging that part of my brain that makes me feel pain. He won't consider it because it's so dangerous to not be able to feel at all. I wonder if that would make you feel numb or just not feel pain. I wouldn't want to feel nothing though. Even pain is something. Walking around in a numb body doesn't sound so great.
I am just SO tired of being in pain, I'd do almost anything. I am pretty desperate to have less pain.
I have Osteo arthritis and it helps with that pain and some of the fibro pain but it doesn't make me pain free. And if I do more activity the pain goes up. I can't walk far or stand for long before everything is flared up.
I probably need something stronger but I won't do that.
I do not know why you responded well to the med and then not. Perhaps you do need the other Meds.
It is hard to find what works. I would discuss it with your doctor. Hopefully you'll find the right treatment plan soon. Don't give up.
I had to stop when I started taking Savella, and even though I didn't start back on the Savella, I didn't restart the Tramadol because the weaning off was just awful. No withdrawal pain but the most awful restless legs that I didn't sleep for 36 hours.
It's an effective med for a lot of people. Others not so much just like anything else with Fibro.
No idea why it wouldn't work during the day except for maybe what someone else said about lack of sleep increasing pain.
ULTRACET (tramadol hydrochloride/acetaminophen) - combines two analgesics, tramadol 37.5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg.
It helps me with the pain most of the time, but it doesn't totally get rid of the pain. Of course some days nothing helps with the pain. But at least I get some relief on many days. I still have too much pain to function like I used to, but at least I don't have to sit in my chair all day long due to pain.
Godstrength: I hope you find the right pain med that wil work for you.
