I have been prescribed Restoril for sleep when travelling.  Can I open the capsule and split the contents into smaller amounts to put in empty capsules that I would buy?  I'm nervous to try the full 30 mg dose.

Ask your doctor to prescribe the lower strength rather than dividing the content of the capsule, which is never correct anyway. You never know the excipients you have divided consist of the active drug or binding/suspending agent. 30mg Temazepam is quite strong; it would definitely knock out a healthy person.

I saw this on the news feed that's why I'm answering... I hope that it's okay..... Temazepam or Restoril also comes in 15 mg so you can ask your doc for that or if he's giving you a benzo you could ask for another drug if it's to strong like Ativan.... I wish you well... xo
