I have two non Earth-shatterinh things on which I would like to get the groups opinion please.
Thing 1 -- Bridezilla is getting her double mastectomy with reconstruction on Nov 1. I have offered to go help her once she gets home, but her mother is already bossing everyone around so that might not happen. I would like to put together a care package for her, but having avoided major surgery myself I don't know what she might need? Any ideas? There seem to even be special clothes for them to wear in recovery, but I don't know how helpful that would be?
Thing 2-- PD and I have postponed our vacation until mid-October. My in-laws had to file a tax extension due to the timing of FILs stroke. PD has tried multiple times to get the taxes filed. They refuse to give him the info. So I just found out the taxes are due the weekend we are going away. We have until a week before to cancel with a $10 fee. Later than that and we forfeit the entire deposit, so $80. Now FIL might need him to look at the taxes that weekend. PD told them he will look at them no later than the weekend before and to get them done. BUT he told me that if we HAVE to lose the deposit then it's not like it's our last dollar. I am torn between being the bigger person because these people medically can't help the way they are BUT inside I am stomping my foot like a petulant 2 year old about losing my vacation and the money. And the same 2 year old is seething because we know my SIL has been taking trips this whole time. So go ahead, tell me if I am being a butt or setting healthy boundaries.
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Perseid meteor showers, the "biggies" usually every year. (The Leonids beat 'em one year IMHO).AND today much of the northern hemisphere will see 5 to 99% solar eclipse. How cool is that? Your best bet is to be in the UK or norhtern Spain, where totality is excellent before sundown. Me, I'll get a super duper tiny itty bitty slice of it, so little that it won't be noticeable. New...

For the vacation/taxes, firmly stick to PDs suggestion of getting it done the weekend before, or not at all. Even if you can afford to lose $80, it's important for you guys to get away. Don't give up your vacation! I know your in laws have had medical issues but they obviously know when the taxes are due and that they need to get done. Feel free to remind them every day when your deadline is, and if they miss it, PDs siblings can deal with it.
In practice I absolutely suck at setting healthy boundaries, but I can tell you that the lines you want to draw are perfectly fine.
I say keep your vacation and go no matter what! They know you have plans and when you are able to help. Yes they have health issues but YOUR mental AND physical health are just as important as theirs! You have MORE than earned your vacation! at least 95% of the time mom does understand if i have to cancel coming on day or change the time or if i cant commit to something due to pain, right now i do push myself more to help her due to how sick she is from that dang deer tick parasite in her blood and dealing with c diff issues but i also know when to stop and rest! Which reminds me i need to make cupcakes before 1 pm tomorrow her two *puppies* turned 3 this week, one today and one this past tuesday they are cousins, their moms are twins :) They are raised like twins as well! We are having a puppy party with moms 5 dogs and our 1 tomorrow and another friend might come of moms too!
And thank you also for the feedback regarding vacation. We are going camping and only camp when it's not hot due to the humidity effecting my migraines.
And, you should go on vacation as scheduled. They've been told repeatedly about the deadline. You deserve and need some time to yourself. No reason to feel guilty when they don't want to cooperate. Go and have fun.
I agree with the other suggestions, especially a series of books she can read, maybe each one relatively short (mystery series often are that way). Comfy gear is essential, but maybe a gift card so she can get what she wants online?
HUGS to you.
