This is the third time I have been to this physical therapist. The first time we just talked, the second time he did manual traction on my leg. I had to cancel the next two appts because of the stomach flu. So yesterday I went and he had me get in different positions and literally pounded on my body - lower back , sacrum, pelvis and hips. I feel like someone has beaten me with a baseball bat. WTH !!!!!!!!!!
He is the one and only physical therapist at the pain clinic I go to for my back. They rave about him. He was aggressive and abused my body. He also wasnt very nice to me, but in the past was.
He then tells me to buy a 150 dollar recumbent stationary bike and work up to 40 minutes a day 4 times a week. Even gives me a picture of it from Amazon. Wow, so unrealistic for me. I am one of those people who hasnt been able to work ( its been 11 years) because my fibro is so debilitating and I have other problems from the fibro.
I am angry. There is no way I am letting this guy do this to me again. But then I will be considered noncompliant. I have been to many physical therapists over the years and havent ever been beat up like that.
Has anyone else experienced this before?

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
If not, then write out the physical therapy actions taken, the changes in your pain levels, and the total difference from what you were led to expect.
No physical therapist is to be submitting to the patient that a particular bicycle will be effective therapy without FIRST working with patient on said piece of equipment in person during a normal therapy session.
This was drummed into me by the pain management therapist, who explained the stress that you are talking about can create additional flame pain, thus adding to the original problem you attend physical therapy for.
Have the clinic review the treatment plan, request a written copy of it, and see if it comes close to what you have written in your statement at home.
Then, after you have time to calm down, ease off the pain, and you are able to talk without flaring up too much, sit down, and discuss the issue with the physical therapist to make sure you are being heard as a complete individual, not just a specific therapy case.
I hope this helps.
I switched four different clinics before I gave up, and after seeing the pain management psychiatrist, listening to his diagnosis from start to finish, all the options I have available, I'm finally on the slow road to recovery both mentally and physically.
The difference is learning the type of pain you are treating through physical therapy.
Best wishes.
My nurse told me to stay away from the pain clinics. Don't know why, never been to one. But I have been to chiropraters who hurt me worst than I was.
These pain clinics are big chains and businesses, I would find a patient advocate or someone in the system to bring this person to the fore-front. He might be hurting other people too and making big bucks.
I did not go back to that clinic.
They don't have this piece of equipment there for me to even try out- they hardly have any equipment.
I tried there PT. I failed miserably at it. They wanted me to come in the same hours my hubby had to be at work.
They insisted that I find a neighbor, family member, church member to come and watch my special needs kids while I went there to work out.
They also insisted that I follow their protocol for PT. (this I had no problem with except the heated pool, I was becoming nauseated and the heat irritated the nerves on my skin where I was submerged).
Their lack of any level of sympathy was beyond comprehension. This is the place that I allowed to do a spinal epidural block in my back. I suffered from a spinal migraine over a long holiday weekend. They pressured me into getting another one done and nearly pushed pain pills down my throat to help me with it. I finally stood my ground and said no.
It was their way or the highway. Funny thing is, the highway was a much better experience for me. I came here, listened to some very wise members and learned to care for myself. I learned what to eat, what not to eat, how to exercise properly, how to adjust my life when needed and more importantly how to push myself each day to survive WITH pain.
Not a day nor breath passes by me with out pain running through it. But I am so incredibly thankful for what I found here.
My story may end up being your story too. But you maybe are experiencing a blessing in disguise too. Maybe you'll find a better place. I wanted to share my story with you to let you know it's okay and SAFE for you to pull the plug on this place if they are abusing you.
I'm also one who can not have any deep tissue or soft tissue work done on my back. I become bedridden when I allow it.
That sounds more like my bad experience with PT. I was there for whiplash treatment and she decided to do treatments that made me worse and weren't even focused on the injury.
I agree...get a written copy of your treatment plan. The last thing you need is to be a guinea pig or just blown off.
