Sometimes there are websites that will tell you what doctors consider fibromyalgia and stuff. But a rheumy is probably your best idea.
It's not a common thing that I have seen, but I myself do get the hot/cold flashes. I'll have chills all over my body, but be sweating like crazy sometimes as well. It's almost worse than the pain. You have my sympathies!
Please don't let the doctors get you down. I don't think any of us have found a doctor that understood and treated us properly on the first try. I myself suffered for 7 yrs. before I found a doctor that finally treated me properly, but it was worth the wait. My doc is amazing, and I'd follow her to the ends of the earth. She listens to everything. Just don't give up. YOu'll find a doc who understands eventually. If you think your brother's doc will actually do a good job, drive or no, I'd go see that doc. My doc is a 3 hour round trip every month, but it's worth it.
Yes, you have some symptoms, but that doesn't mean you have it. You have to be diagnosed.
That's my opinion.Try to have a painfree day.
Good luck to you!!!
Hormones Rule our World...if they ain't Happy then No one is happy...get in...get checked...preferrably by an Intelligent Dr. as FM is NOT the Physical manifestation of Depression.
Find a Dr. that does Not have an issue Treating "Female Patients"/ that does Not downplay every little thing as "Female Hysteria"...Good thing they don't treat us like they "Used To" huh girls.
sorry
healing prayers & angels to watch & guide you & those that are taking care of you!

My own feeling is this doctor and those like him are not taking time to keep current on updated medical information or have decided that none of those who have done the research know what they are talking about. I would feel insecure with a doctor like this as he may feel the same way about other things and disregard exam. tests, or treatment for other things as well...
fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek ones for muscle (myo) and pain (algia).
I might asked this doc. if there is not such thing as fibromyalgia why are people being diagnosed with it... Why are they allowed to do advertising on t.v. and promote medicine for something you say does not exsist. I would of ask if he knew what the purpose would be for the AMA to recognizing something that did not really exsist or the ACR..along with many others such as the Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins, Arithristis Foundation.to name a few....Would of asked him what other health issues do you think are not exsisting that have been accepted and recognized by the AMA or ACR... would of said are you telling me that the AMA and ACR are lieing to us about FM being real and we are all being falsiely diagnosed. Please help me doc as I want to understand why you feel this does not exsist and that the AMA ia lieing and all the other people doing research etc would be lieing or making this up because I reallyI want to know. Can you show me why you feel this doc. and what information and research you have done personally to know that none of these people know what they are talking about. I would like you to share that with me so I xan understand better your feelings.
Doctors have got to come together on this issue as I feel it is very unfair for those of us who are diagnosed with and suffer with it to have some doc's,,saying it does exsist and others telling people it does not... they need to stop the mixed messages. Is hard enough dealing with this crap without having people sitting around thinking somehow we made up the name and symotoms ourselves ... Those professionals who do not believe it exsists need to show why and show the research they did to come to their conclusions as being so much more knowledgable on the topic that they can so boldly and un caringly say it does not exsist or accept the information they have before them as being valid... I don't mean this to be mean just frustrating to keep hearing doctors contradicting one another ... they have no idea how this affects those of us who have been diagnosed with it and trying to understand it ourselves.
Causes

Doctors don't know what causes fibromyalgia, but it most likely involves a variety of factors working together. These may include:
Genetics. Because fibromyalgia tends to run in families, there may be certain genetic mutations that may make you more susceptible to developing the disorder.
Infections. Some illnesses appear to trigger or aggravate fibromyalgia.
Physical or emotional trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder has been linked to fibromyalgia.
Why does it hurt?
Current thinking centers around a theory called central sensitization. This theory states that people with fibromyalgia have a lower threshold for pain because of increased sensitivity in the brain to pain signals.
Researchers believe repeated nerve stimulation causes the brains of people with fibromyalgia to change. This change involves an abnormal increase in levels of certain chemicals in the brain that signal pain (neurotransmitters). In addition, the brain's pain receptors seem to develop a sort of memory of the pain and become more sensitive, meaning they can overreact to pain signals.

I am sorry you had such a doctor and hope you will find one who will be more helpful for you to find out the sourse of what you are going through. I truely do hope it is menopause and things will get better for you soon.
Take care gentle hugs
Have you done research on the Net about Fibro? I believe there are some sites that give you a list of symptoms you can check off to take to your doctor to SHOW him where it hurts. I would continue to look for a doctor who believes in Fibro. Even if it turns out not to be, at least to find a doctor who takes your pain seriously enough to check into it would be worth it.
Physical depression. That's a good word for Fibro! Good luck!
