I had a friend with fibro years ago and I didn't believe her. This was before I came down with it.
I thought to myself how could anyone feel that bad all the time? I took her to appointments and listened to her on the phone complain all the time. I had to give her up as a friend because she was abusing pain meds and slurring and stopped driving. She checked out of life.
Doctors may see us the same way I used to. The progression of fibro being blamed on us focusing on it too much is interesting. How can you not focus on pain when it is screaming? Saying we are hypochondiacs that overfocus on ourselves is one way. My mother told me people become their illnesses. She is a nurse so there may be some truth to that. I still think pain is something that is hard to ignore.
The article was just very negative and written by someone that thinks Fibro is a form of hypochondria. Med's don't work because they haven't found one yet that works for fibro.
I read several articles last night on what meds work for fibro. The answer I found was none do. Some heavy hitters may mask it but they have to be constantly increased and then leave you useless and in a stupor. I would rather have pain then be nodding off in a chair.
I doubt anyone could have convinced me that fibro was real before I got it. I wish their was a test or something scientific that would show our pain is real...
Here's the contact: webquest@arthritis-research.org. I just put attention to Dr. Wolfe in the subject line.
I think we all owe it to ourselves to email both him and the NY Times.
I think they should have to do REAL reasearch with real people like us, before they print this kind of garbage.
