My foam topper is a nice compromise for me on comfort and price. A good pillow is huge, too. I ended up making my own. The ones I bought were either too puffy too firm too feathery or too noisy (buckwheat hulls, OMG)...
Luck to you!
I started out with a pillow top. failed.
Then we got a sleep number. Which was great for falling asleep, but I'd wake up in pain.
Then we got a memory foam topper...still great for falling asleep, but I'd wake up in nasty pain.
Finally we got a 12" memory foam mattress. Best ever for me.
Like Leo said, it's a personal thing.
So my advice to you is go somewhere where they have a good & lengthy return policy!!!
Finding the right combo can be a case of trial and error. I don't recommend a memory foam mattress by itself. The memory foam tends to give out where you lay so a person feels like they are sinking into hollowed out nest. At least memory foam toppers aren't so expensive they can't be replaced every two years or so.
On About.com's fibro forum area, I have read of some very different mattress/padding comb's so it shows just how individual we all are and what we need to be comfortable. Good luck!
I have tried many things that have failed. No toppers worked well for me. I have a memory foam mattress with a gel layer that feels pretty comfortable, is the best thing so far, but like others have said isn't a cure.
