I feel your pain....literally!
About 2 weeks ago I awoke with such pain in the back of my head that I was unable to look up or open my mouth wide. The doc said its TMJ again. Just another horrible thing that comes along with FM.
I've tried the teeth guards and they didn't work for me. First I tried the cheap kind that you can buy in the drugstore. I chewed thru those in about a week. Then I bought a very expensive one the made special for my mouth and woke up choking on it.
"put right thumb in mouth & place it between the joints of the jaw w/ pointer finger underneath ear where jaw joins= apply pressure w/thumb inside pointer outside hold for as long as you can w/as much pressure
then do other side or i use both hands on ea side @ same times must do often to get release then atleast once aday
also a bite splint while sleeping or doind any strenious job
& don't hold teeth together keep mouth relaxed w/teehing not touching when your mouth is closed!
donot chew gum or ice or anything hard!
this also is good for popping jaws
healing prayers & angels to watch over "US" all

PeaceN2You, funny you should mention your jaw locking up. My Jaw used to do that as a kid; I could only open it a little bit, when it happened.

remember when up set or just doing things thru out day =don't let teeth touch ea other can keep mouth closed just don't let teeth =keep a litle space between them ,it helps releive tightnes in jaw! cause your slightly streching jaw muscle!
or push tongue up to roof of mouth & press, this is good for neck aches/head aches
