what do y'all do for ibs? supplements? meds? foods to avoid? foods to eat?
ibs tends to be pretty cursing for me.... but maybe there's something in here that maybe some help to you....
i avoid beef at all costs. it causes bloating, horrid stomach pain and constipation for days. but every once in a very blue moon, i can't resist it, since i am the grill master. lol
can't eat mexican food! no onions! causes bloating, gas that will melt your nose hairs, & sometimes explosive diarrhea!
i avoid fast food and greasy foods.
also avoid narcotics/pain meds because it tears up my stomach and causes constipation for days.
i have learned recently that i need to eat enough RAW veggies & fruit in my daily diet (versus cooked veggies) with my regular food. it's the raw ones that have been reducing my stomach pain. pretty cool, huh? however, it does make me feel like a rabbit.
i do a 5 day organic raw veggie & fruit (nothing else) cleanse once a month as a maintenance thing now that my doc has recommended for me. the results are worth it!!
my doc has prescribed me lactulose for my ibs-c. i take 2-3 tpoons 2-3x a day.
-i also take digestive enzymes every now and then (i tend to forget...oops)
-organic aloe vera juice
-20 billion probiotic acidophilus (blueberry flavor, liquid, keep refrigerated, $10 at the vit store) just bought it, so we'll see how it goes
-liquid organic wormwood: 10-20 drops in a little water 1-3x a day. (no.... you don't hallucinate, and yes, it's legal) also used as an anti parasite, and treats heartburn as well. i just bought it, so we'll see how this plays out. oh and i just read that this is NOT for long term usage so just use it on and off occasionally. ...darn.
currently, i'm wondering if i'm one of the people that can't eat wheat and don't know it yet. so, i'm switching slowly to oat, and seeing if that will make any difference. any advice?
over time, little by little, i'm learning little things about my ibs and what can be done. i know....it's a lot of maintenance.
i'd like to hear your stories......

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Raw veggies are a curse for me. The leafy green kind will cause me agony for 2 days.
I have a prescription for Lomotil that I will take when I'm in complete agony and have to leave the house.
A trick I found that seems to be working the best is to take a 'Beano' pill before I eat these foods that are problematic for me. It works wonders for me.
I've too have adapted to a rabbit life style. You would think that if I eat like a rabbit I would eat play and poop like one too. Nope! Fat chance!
I have had to cut out red meats. I noticed a few years back that I couldn't tolerate beef sticks...LOVED them. Now, if I even have one bite, it throws my tummy into WWIII.
I am very cautious about other meats too. I stick to my whitties. Turkey, Chicken and Fish. (occasionally pork).
Eggs....man if I even say the word, I'm running for the bathroom. Seriously, you can clock it. My tummy does not like eggs. I'm in there w/ in minutes. It's okay if the eggs are used in something like cookies/ cakes and such...but not as the main ingredient.
I haven't given onions much thought. See "Suzie" is my ass. She gets quite talkative some days. And lately Suzie has brought on the tear gas. I'll have to play around with it and see if it is the onions. Hmm.
And I also avoid processed sugar! I can not handle it. My gut starts doing the mambo inside my tummy. It's like watching jello shake and giggle. Honestly it reminds me of baby kicks. My kids were quite active when I was carrying them.
Processed sugar also makes me dizzy now and I get a sugar headache (this is my new name for that Migraine wanna be headache)
So, getting back to the IBS, I have modified my diet. I also HAVE to eat my Activa yogurt each day. Sometimes 2 servings / day. And I have my big fatty salad each day too.
I tried the whole cleanse your gut thing under the docs orders. I was doubled over in such horrible pain for 3 days. This was after one dose. It was the 20 billion pro-biotic stuff. Yah, I'm just too much of a wuss to do that again!
My IBS has transformed my diet. And when I need it to behave ( while under stress or something like that)..I take my Imodium. I try not to take that though.
Did you ever see that Saturday Night Live skit with Jamie Lee Curtis and Activia..........hahaha .......well you get the picture.
no spicey food, beef makes me gag, no deep fried...Oh hell, no almost everything.
It is easier to tell what I do eat....
baked chicken
pasta
bread
olive oil
cereal
not much else
your diet is more strict than mine! holy crap. i hope i don't have to whittle it all the way down to that size
poor thing....
on my really bad days i just drink ensure and not eat.
I forgot that I also eat Bocca burgers
Spicy foods are not the best for me either. I also have given up sweets pretty much and that has seemed to help also.
magnesium is something i have to get back to taking. maybe at dinner time. i take too many meds before bed time, so magnesium isn't something i can take with it.
Since I started taking Savella for my Fibro I noticed a hugely dramatic improvement in my IBS symptoms. My doctor says it's because IBS is part of the same "syndrome" as our Fibro -- it's all the same thing, she says.
Thus the nerve endings are affected in our digestive system by the same things that cause the flares in the rest of our bodies. (stress, etc) So while the Savella was helping the nerve pains in my shoulders and all the other places we all hurt, it also began to help in my digestive tract.
I am totally amazed how much better my IBS is. Occasionally a stressful situation can still send me running and knock me flat...but not as badly as it used to! Has anyone else been put on Savella who has Fibro and IBS?
Rice has water soluable fiber which carries needed moisture to the intestines. This can also be found in the fiber powders that disolve in water. They are expensive for me and rice is not. But that is just me. :o)
I have noticed drinking coffee works as well too.:)
