Ya know, I am always suspicious of cause/effect type findings. It takes a long time to figure out which comes first, as in the chicken and the egg...
I read this little article that shows that women with IBS show changes in their brain. MY own immediate thought was that yeah! But the changes in the brain are connected with the CAUSE of IBS, not that IBS causes the changes. So if my FM and all are viral caused as I believe ... the virus could be or could have effected changes in the brain AS WELL AS the IBs that I suffer from. but this is an interesting finding. I think we're all still in the stage of "if they show that it's physiological instead of psychlogical, that's great!"
This is from my Heather's IBS news email:
Women with IBS Show Brain Changes
A large study published in a recent issue of Gastroenterology has demonstrated structural changes in specific brain regions in female patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
The findings show that IBS is associated with both decreases and increases in grey matter density in key areas of the brain involved in attention, emotion regulation, pain inhibition and the processing of visceral information
"Discovering structural changes in the brain, whether they are primary or secondary to the gastrointestinal symptoms, demonstrates an organic component to IBS and supports the concept of a brain-gut disorder," said study author Dr. Emeran Mayer, professor of medicine, physiology and psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
"Also, the finding removes the idea once and for all that IBS symptoms are not real and are only psychological. The findings will give us more insight into better understanding IBS."
Learn about gut-directed hypnotherapy, the only treatment researchers have called a "cure" for the brain-gut dysfunction that underlies IBS.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
does this mean my IBS is coming from a physical part of my brain?
cuz my current GI doctor is trying to prove to me that mine is all stress related and purely psychological, at the moment.
What *I* am saying is that they could be both symptoms of the same disease, illness, syndrome, whatever they wsh to call it, but what ever *IT* is, it's physical. Now, I do believe that stress causes physical changes also, and our bodies adapt, not always in nice ways, so it can be true that stress contributes to the falling to this illness.
