Hello everyone! I have come back here after a while of inactivity for some advice. I've been working a swing shift job for the last 5 years mostly on my feet. About a year into it I was diagnosed with the Fibromyalgia. Previously I have seen at least 7 orthos, 2 rheumies, 4 or 5 different neurologists, including having been to TWO major medical centers with neurology/neuromuscular specialitiest. So basically I was glad to get some kind of diagnosis and treatment plan. That Rheumy treated me for 2 years, but what we have found is that I am very sensititive to many medications and ultimately could not take anything currently prescribed.
I have managed with supplements and giving myself as much break as possible. It has been difficult and a very painful journey. I am told that I have changed much over this time and am nothing like the person that I was. I guess not, that person worked out 6 days a week and thought she was Hades on wheels :). Now - not so much!
During this time my PCP has been fairly worthless. She wouldn't even give me a physical when I asked for one. I've been meaning to change practices, but I really only saw her to get some antibiotics the 2 xs a year I get sinus infections. About a year and half ago, her practice was taken over by someone else. He says there are almost no records for me from the last 5 years! So I gave him the info that I had and let it go. The last 3 times I have seen him he has told me to see an Orthopedist, that I just don't have Fibro (I went in for an ear infection, a sinus infection and bronchitis. Nothing Ortho related.) In February, my husband was injured. His injury has about a year recovery time. The night before his surgery, I twisted my knee. When by April it still wasn't better I went to my PCP for my knee and my opposite ankle had also started to swell. I saw another doctor in the practice because my usual wasn't available. This lady tells me they have No Record of ANY of my diagnosis, including one that I've had for over 20 years. Furthermore, she tells me my joints aren't swollen, that I just weigh X amount and that is why you can't see the bones.
So fast forward to last week. I now have 2 swollen ankles, a swollen knee, and a cough for the last 8 weeks. So I go back to the PCP. He starts pressing on me saying, "Look, you just don't have Fibro. Fibro patients burst into tears when I do that. NOW will you please see an Orthopedist?" He refers me to a spine specialist because I have "obvious back problems". So I call Ortho and their first question is, "Did they do any test?" The xrayed my knee. Receptionist says, "They x-rayed your knee and sent you to us for a back problem?" Yeah lady, that is about right.
I made the appointment but I cancelled it because I am just not sure what to do. My Mom recently retired and she came up and stayed for a week because it hurts so bad for me to drive. But she had to go home at the end of last week. She also left becuase she wants to force me to make a decision to get care, as she says, "Fibro isn't real. You have a REAL problem and need to see someone. All these years in pain and maybe they could have done something if you'd seen a REAL doctor."The week of essentially sitting on my backside helped, but the swelling went right back as soon as I stood up for any length of time. I don't know if I should just set a new patient appointment and start all over?Try more rest? Set another ortho appointment? Meanwhile, I am having about 6 anxiety (I think) attacks a day and am scared to leave the house. Suggestions?

Never trust "we'll talk" in a relationship. Life lesson learned. The other person talks. You are TOLD.***I'm exhausted, ill, and quite done with being strong. So, today's advice:Screw 'em.Like that shower curtain? Buy it. It's your damn view when you clean that bathroom, right?Want that book? Get it. Books good.Need that extra serving? Eat it. Sometimes we've expended a ton of energy and we do...

All that to say.... I don't think it's fibro. I've had that dx 20 years and that kidn of swelling would mean I had two sprained ankles and a sprained knee.
BTW, tell the ortho nurse, if you see that one? Alterations in gait from knee and/or ankle issues will result in back pain. It travels up to the back and back down again. Seriously, did she neer hear the "Foot bone connected to the ankle bone connected to the shin bone connected to the knee bone connected to the hip bone connected to the backbone" song?
The reason I'm hesitant is that this same outfit also did a spinal xray the day they did the knee. They tell me that it showed NO problems with my spine. They actually said I have far less age related changes that what one would expect in someone my age. (Good news, right?)
This is ironice because I have a report from them from 5 years ago that says that I have arthritis in every joint. They told me then to file for disability! So last week when they called me with these results I asked, "What happened to all this arthritis I have supposedly had for the last 5 years?" They had no idea what I was talking about.
So is what he said true, that all Fibromites cry when they are touched?Because I NEVER had that symptom. I was always lead to believe that it was a condition of a variety of levels, where some people are very ill, some are more functional and most of us vascillate between various levels of problems. Thanks for the info.
There are certain areas on my body that bring me to my knees when touched. There are others that don't feel too bad.
I certainly don't think seeing an orthopedist would hurt.
I spent all day Wednesday on the couch. By Wednesday night I was in so much pain I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. I ended up calling my Mom up from out of state to help out as I can barely walk. So I broke down and called the Ortho outfit associated with my Doctor's office. They got me in for this Wednesday morning. They asked me at least three times why I was sent to ortho. Then the admin kept saying, "OK, so the pain is here?" On the third time, I said "No, I'll tell you again these are my symptoms. "Listed everything out. She said, "OK I have NO IDEA why you would be sent to Ortho for these symptoms. It just doesn't make sense. But I will put down what you said."
I have a $5 bet with Mom that I will be in the office less than 5 minutes and they will tell me -- as others have in the past -- to go back to my PCP because these symptoms are not handled by their specialty.
Just because you do or don't have pain when the doctor pressed on a few places doesn't prove you do or don't have fibromyalgia. It's much more complicated than that.
Your journey through the medical field, being sensitive to medication and supplements and physically aging sounds like so many of us on this site.
Because there are not quick fixes most medical people would just like to keep passing us around and around. I found the most help by consulting with an internist, Dr. Lipton, from Portland, Oregon (who also has fibro) and alternative docs. It takes energy, which most of don't have, to keep pushing forward with our medical needs. Shoot, just calling for an appt. is draining, not to mention getting to the appt.
That being said I have to agree with LeoX3, it is time to make another phone call to another doctor and start all over again. The symptoms you are having sound like something not covered under the Fibro heading. Go to a different PCP and maybe she/he will be the one that will help you.
Good luck
X-rays do not show soft tissue or nerve damage.
Do not allow your dr to dismiss your fibro. We have all gone thru too many years of non or missed diagnosis to be dismissed by some dr in some office that has not even kept records on you. Sorry for the rant. This just makes me mad.
I have many conditions that are not directly caused by fibro. However, many of my conditions cause my fibro to flare.
Sorry so many meds don't work for you. I attended a 1 year long mind-body pain management program where I learned many non medication ways to cope and control pain. It is based on a Harvard School of Medicine program. Many of the methods are discussed on this board.
Gentle hugs.
Second, *no* we do not all cry out and scream or weep with pain when touched. In a flare? Oh holy Mother, I can whimper and flinch just rolling over in my sleep.... But on a "good" day? You have to hit specific scarred areas of my body, and those hurt every day anyway. (Stupid scars.) Anyway, the point is, I've hissed, blinked, flinched, twitched, yipped, cursed, gasped, and a few times said, "Ouch!" but I have yet to cry or yell out in pain re: Fibro. So no, we do not *all* scream or weep. I've got Puma Pride. I save that for at home. At the doc, I pretend I'm not there, or I can't survive the poke-prod-Hammer-Thumb crapola.
That said, the "pain points" test for fibro is not definitive, nor considered a true diagnostic test in the same sense as a CT or MRI would be. It's a clinical *guide*, not a clinical *gospel*, and docs tend to confuse the two.
I reiterate: Find. Doctor. Now. Go to an ER if you have to, but get that swelling checked, okay?
