To put a long story short.....my husband and I are looking at filing for bankruptcy, bills keep building up and we can barely pay the utility bills! I cringe every time my cell phone rings. I also don't feel that we can afford (I know awful pun) to go to court with the medical bills which will eventually happen since we won't be able to afford any payment plans they suggest. We are utterly tapped out right now!

My problem: We have to file for bankruptcy and can't afford a lawyer. There is no way to raise the funds. So I have to do the paperwork and frankly the complicatedness of this paperwork is intimidating and complicated paperwork is not well mixed with foggy brains. So does anyone know of a step-by-step book that explains this paperwork...terms, what papers I have to turn in, when, etc.? Or a website that explains the same? A "bankruptcy for dummies" book as it were?

Sorry to hear about your financial woes! I know what you mean about filling out forms, my mind just turns into a bowl of mush when try to figure these things out...

My family and I are in the same situation. However, bankruptcy never crossed my mind. We are having so many issues right now. We went from a monthly income of around 5 grand to a monthly income of about 600. That is a long way from being comfortable, but we manage. My husband has been on short-term disability for the last three months he has stress fractures across both feet and is on zero weight bearing for God knows how long. I want you to be encouraged because you are not alone. We are facing the idea of having to move to a government subsidized housing project and that kills me. But all for my family and I will do whatever is necessary to keep us above water.

Thanks. Don't know if we'll be going the bankruptcy route or not now. Will be considering section 8 housing as an option esp. if we wind up moving to Seattle.

Don't know if you have legal aid in your area but they sometimes can be helpful in handling these things or giving advice on what can do. They are free attornies that help people who cannot afford legal helps.

Maybe could do a google search for your area and see if can find anything on Legal aid for your area.

Sorry you are going through this hard time been there as well. Sec. 8 can take a long time if they have a long waiting list. The other is HUD.

If your income warrants you may qualify for medicaide. Can check this out with your local social service dept.
