Today in 1498, Michelangelo received the commission to carve the Pieta, the defining symnbol of maternal love and anguish in Renaissance marble, IMO. She is a matronly, exhausted woman holding across her legs the body of her child, whose body is limp yet shows hsi muscularity (he was a carpenter and did a lot of walking, after all), and she seems very young. It's the definitive "pieta", a term that just means in general "the pity/compassion" of the moment of Mary holding her son after the crucifixion. As art, you needn't be of any faith to appreciate the strength shown by Mary, and note that Mar'ys legs are in birth-giving position. Many other pietas have Mary kneeling by the body or very very awkwardly trying ot hold the corpse without success. Hence, Michelangelo's being such a big deal.
And today in 1920, women got the vote in the US: sex could not keep women from the polls, per 19th amendment. Over 20 million women became eligible to vote in the 1920 presidential election.

I'm exhausted and my head is pounding. Not sure if it's stress or allergies, or both. I got my certification stuff for NH done yesterday, so I'll be all set once the new law takes effect. Now that I just spent $150 on that, I got a statement from my doctor's office for $65 -_-. I'm trying to distract myself by looking for an inflatable cone for Miki. I've found a couple that can be here tomorrow, and it's narrowed down to a donut or a watermelon. Will probably go with watermelon. Now I just need to get through the day with Karen whining about freaking everything...just want to get this week over with.
