Family Issues Support Group
Family issues is a huge range that go from minor conflict to major misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur. Whether you feel you are in a dysfunctional family or you're dealing with a very specific issue, this is the place to talk about it and find others who might be going through the same thing.
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the family issues group. I joined as part of an online course I'm taking for group counseling, but more importantly I joined to engage in the process of self-reflection. I selected this particular group because family issues is one of the most conflicting areas in my life. I'm hoping participating in this group can bring me a heightened sense of self-awareness, and possible alter some of my coping strategies. One area I would like to discuss is my relationship with my brother. He suffers from a mental illness that was diagnosed in his early 20's, he’s currently 28. Prior to the onset of his mental illness, my brother and I didn’t have the closest relationship but we interacted more. When his illness came into the equation our relationship worsened. It’s been a challenging experience for my family, learning to adapt to his condition and his new mental state. I’ve watched members in my family take on his burdens, while he continues to worsen his circumstances by his actions. I now realize that this new phase in his life is harder for him than it ever will be for us, but that doesn’t mean I have to take on his personal baggage. I struggle with being too hard on him, but then not being an enabler at the same time. I want to see him prosper and get a grip on his condition. You can only take so much of watching someone self-destruct before you become detached. People on the outside looking in make it seem like I’m not supportive enough, and there are times when I agree and feel bad about it. Then there are other times when I feel you can only help someone who wants to be helped. I feel like it's a constant internal battle I have with myself.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

You are right boundaries are really important and people do have to be involved in their own well being and stability
Can you write more about what's going on with your brother if you're comfortable?... Gentle hug....xo
Sorry for the rant. I haven't been able to really talk about it and it just sort of came spewing out. This isn't all he's done to me over the years. I've been able to forgive him for what he did during my childhood because I realize, and acknowledge, that my childhood is between God, myself, and my parents but I don't know if I'll EVER forgive my brother for his adulthood. He did something so horrific, selfish, self-indulgent, narcissistic, egotistical, and arrogant that it set me back in my own healing journey, during it he was physically threatening and(afterwards)he didn't give a d-. I'm to the point where I don't love him. I was once asked if I ever would and I said 'no' but, once I thought about it, I realized I'd give him a chance if he came, groveled before me, begged me for my forgiveness, and apologized for what he'd done. Seeing as how he'll never do that because he loved what he did and said that it brought him a lot of satisfaction, relief, and" healing" than it'll NEVER happen.
I'm Happy you were able to rant. Sometimes ranting is the best way to process our thoughts, and I appreciate your courage to do so. I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and I can only imagine the journey you have been on. I connected to certain parts of your story, especially when you discussed your mother enabling your brothers behavior. This is something I' struggle with in regards to my mother as well. I believe the reasoning behind her behavior is guilt. I think she blames part of herself for my brothers condition. I know she looks back and things and pin points areas she could have done better. Another part of it is fear, fear of not doing enough and fear of his downfall. Thank you for sharing your story.
Hugs and prayers. Also joined this group for a counseling course but hoping to learn along the way. Following this conversation as the mother of a 20 year old who still lives at home with little motivation and I relate with looking back and finding things/areas where I could have done better. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your conversation and wish you all the very best.
