Good point, Shai... I guess that's the best way to put it- profanity can be a trigger for a lot of us and should be kept to a minimum, IMHO.

Hello Chris, pleased to meet you. I understand perfectly the points that you have made; they are very valid points and you are not unpopular with me because you have a different point of view on this subject.

I've never witnessed in this forum nor have I ever participated in shunning nor have I ever admonished or attempted to discourage any OP due to profanity. We humans are a gigantic mass of emotion with the absolute need to express these emotions and for some, swearing is a means of expressing the pain, anxiety and anger for what they've endured.

You are absolutely right, we have a choice to not respond to any post for whatever reason. I don't feel however that swearing is a necessity or an essential tool to communicate effectively. The majority of posters on any forum find profanity or the over usage of these adjectives offensive.

The purpose of this thread is simply to address the volume of the swearing; it's not meant to judge another persons writing styles. And, it's definitely not meant to be so presumptuous that anyone who doesn't swear has a better upbringing or higher IQ or even worse would discourage "anyone" from coming out here and having the freedom to express themselves in whatever fashion they need to.

I think you have very valid points that need to be considered when anyone is communicating with another in whatever forum they've chosen. On the opposite edge of that sword is the fact that more than likely a poster would receive more valuable feedback and advice if they used appropriate language.

I don't think it is right to assume because someone is young they can not communicate in a certain way. I have known many older people who use as much or more profanity as a younger person. We do want to encourage people to feel they can come here for support. There should be guide lines for offensive language so everyone can feel safe coming here to post and respond.

You are right Annie, it's called generation blame and it's definitely stigmatizing a certain age group. So my apologies if I ever implied that which I think I did.

Well why I certainly do not like to hear it every other word! But speaking for myself I find it a great release of stuff in my gut that is really hard for me to get rid of to swear a nice long blue streak.

I generally save it for ppl I KNOW feel the same way as I do about tr though though. I know it bothers a lot of ppl but some ppl even think it is funny.

I read a statistic somewhere that ppl who use foul language are generally more honest and you know where you stand with them.

In my family the odd blue streak is seen as a way to lighten the mood. It is not excessive though and generally gets everybody laughing

People who curse are more honest???

Exactly TroJanthu. You know when to use your words. Believe me I am no saint and have used a few choice words. You have consideration of others.

Not sure where the line can be drawn. Yes, too much swearing gets tired. I do, however, fail to see too much swearing in this group. My concern comes from the fact that the amount of swearing I have read I consider to be minimum. Maybe I have developed tolerance to it since I myself have run live support groups and have worked in human services (not that it makes it any tasteful), but really, I really honestly fail to see so much swearing in this group that it becomes necessary to establish a policy.

The Terms of Service say:

11.1 "Prohibited Content" includes Content that: (i) is offensive or promotes racism, bigotry, hatred or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual; (ii) bullies, harasses or advocates stalking, bullying, or harassment of another person; (iii) involves the transmission of "junk mail," "chain letters," or unsolicited mass mailing, or "spamming," (iv) is false or misleading or promotes, endorses or furthers illegal activities or conduct that is abusive, threatening, obscene, defamatory or libelous;

I suppose I interpret profanity (at the term implies) as offensive and obscene...

I read through the T&C's and the rules of the road. I just couldn't find anything that stated specifically, (the use of profanity). Which, I don't want to stand on a morality pulpit because as Chris stated; there are some folks that use what I might think is offensive language but to them, it's not. It a vital part of their expression to get the point across.

I don't mind swearing; I swear; a lot sometimes. I just think it can be toned down and be aware of what environment you are in when doing so. A first impression is usually the one that lasts the longest.

I think many times, the emotions behind the word colors their meanings.

I think it's the intent I find offensive; not the lexicon.
