Broken family

For years I have avoided my family ,  my mom is a control freak and my sister is just mean and my dad is weird.  But long story short . Now that my kids are grown and on there own.  I realize I have taught them that family doesn't matter.  I have since started working on building a relationship with my mom. It still has some rough patches but we are making things work.  Slowly. I do miss the old days having family cook outs , thanksgiving dinners, birthday parties and all that type of stuff.

I think the best thing I ever did was to just accept my parents as they were and not judge them realizing that I, too have some charactor defects which come from being a human being. When I did that, I got along much better with my parents, esapecially my dad and in his later years, I forgave him for how he treated me when I was a child. After that we did alot of things together, plus he helped me out alot before he died from an accident. We were like best friends and I miss him alot now.

I always remind myself that the past no longer exists except in my mind and when I dredge up the negative stuff from the past, it contaminates the present so I learned to let go of the past and bury it for good. That allowed me to have a life filled with peace and happiness!

I think we have to learn skills to deal with difficult people. We don’t have to react or allow manipulation or argue. We can learn to set boundaries and act not react. I do think when we estrange from our parents we can teach our kids to not value us. But even good parents have adult children who estrange for no good reasons. The world is full of difficult people, bosses, neighbors and relatives. We have to learn to not fold emotionally but take care of ourselves while dealing with these people.

Children do as we do, not as we say. Trying to teach my children that family is important while nurturing the estrangement from my own birth family may have been one of my greater acts of stupidity.

Example is not ONE way to influence others. It's the ONLY way.

These days I am favoring the old Jewish proverb that family is not about right or wrong. It is about being complete.

This hits home for me. My parents have both passed away. I am not close or even in contact with most of my 8 siblings. They have not really tried either to stay in touch. I wish I had a close family. I am close to my adult kids I miss having my original family though too. It feels too late for me I so understand what your saying

    Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...
