The alternative is to get a job, get your own place, move out and be responsible for yourself.
Maybe she has valid points.
18 is young... but it's also legal. Are you going to school? Have a job? Maybe she's worried about you as your mother. Ask her to choose your next book. Seriously. Maybe she'd really open up to you if you are sincere.
I'd be making the comment that, with so much great literature out there, why read the same book THREE times??? Are you obsessing about something in it???
If you don't want her judging your reading selection, get a Kindle that has a password feature and set up an amazon account that she does NOT have access to.
I see your avatar... are you trying to escape life in your book and TV choices???
I guess a fair question is what else do you do with your free time? Are you still in high school? Do you have plans for college or a career? Do you spend time on informative reading like the newspaper or non-fiction books? Do you have hobbies? It's important to have a well rounded life.
I love nothing more than a rainy day curled up on the couch reading a good book. But I don't do that every day. And I don't do that when I have responsibilities waiting for me. Only you know how balanced your life is. Listen to your mom's warning. My guess is she is concerned and not controlling.
Is anything we are mentioning getting through to you? What about our questions/suggestions about talking to your mother or your plans after school? Why only 11th grade at 18, btw?
I'm getting a little frustrated at your non-responsiveness; I can only imagine how your mother must feel.
Your profile mentions some serious issues. Are you seeing a therapist? My guess is your mom is very afraid of you hiding from reality in the novels you love so much. We can only guess but your mom is right there with you. If you don't have a therapist go to your school counselor to talk about this.
Unfortunately society expects kids to grow up very young and make important decisions. You have another year of high school but this is such an important time in your life. You need to consider whether you care going to college or right to work. Either way there are lots of important decisions to make and things to do to prepare. So it's time to take your nose out of that book and live in the world around you. I'd suggest talking to your mom about these real life things. Also split your reading time between your novels and school work. Nothing wrong with entertainment...after your work is done.
It sound like you just want HER to change, but won't consider the possibility that YOU may need to, as well.
Why don't you trust the mental health community?
