He needs professional help-----PRONTO.
Is it possible that he could be into some drugs that you are not aware of? Sometimes when people are acting bizarre, they are under the influence of some heavy drugs.
Maybe the charges just put him over the brink, but he needs to be hospitalized until there is an improvement.
He cannot continue down this road, and the longer you wait, the worse it will be.
His bouts of anger, uncontrollably crying, cutting himself, and depression certainly needs to be dealt with. He is a very confused young man.
I certainly hope he can get the help he needs so badly.
God Bless you and your son. You will be in my thoughts.

Agree with Rew. Sounds like the arrest sent your son over the edge. He might have been having symptoms before, but just didn't show them. Often, mental illnesses don't show up until people are in their 20's. Hopefully, after being observed in the psychiatric facility for a few days, the doctors will have a pretty good idea of what is going on with him and you can take it from there.
You are in a tough spot, however. You are his mom, but he is likely old enough that he legally makes his own decisions. It will depend on the laws of your state. You feel responsible for him, but you may not be able to legally be responsible.
On another post, I had recommended NAMI (National Alliance of the Mentally Ill). This is a community support group and you may find one in your area. You will need support and education. Most of our communities have failed to provide adequate resources for the the mentally ill. If you son has serious problems, you will be pretty much be on your own. NAMI groups are generally very helpful, however.
Keep in touch and let us know how it is going. Sorry you have to go through this. It is a scary time.
Sounds like your son has had a similar reaction to this incredibly stressful situation, and I'd encourage you to find him some treatment, quickly.
