Some professions such as construction or manual labor are better choices for felons and sex offenders. I know several prison friends---two who are registrants---that keep busy welding. They told me that "their boss did not ask and he does not care" about their background as long as they can do the job.
I heard that truck driving is acceptable for a person with a felony conviction in some areas.
He will have to stay away from the larger corporations that routinely perform background checks on every applicant. That probably excludes Wal Mart, Home Depot, and places like that.
If he can find a mom and pop small business, his chances of finding employment will be much better.
These are just a few suggestions off the top of my head, but someone can come along and give you even more ideas.

You mentioned school, if your brother is on probation/parole you may want to have him check with his PO to make sure he is able to attend school. My fiance is not allowed to until he is off probation (this applies to college, I don't know if it applies to a trade school such as welding, electrician, cars etc)
Nathan: that is a good list but I know that many of those companies will not hire a sex offender. There is another list I see often that shows who hires felons, however I know many will not. It never hurts to put in an application. My fiance writes on the criminal part "will explain in interview." He has gotten call backs on some of those. The issue he runs in to the most is that the manager of the location wants to hire him, but corporate will block it. I think that is ridiculous. He worked for a large fast food chain and they had to let him go because corporate found out about his offense.
There is hope tibaker! Another thing that helps, is to get out and talk to people. The last two jobs my fiance has had (including his current one) are because of people he knew or talked to. He doesn't have to talk about his conviction, but talk about what he is good at. His strengths as a person, what his goals are. People pick up on that, even owners of small businesses.
I wish the best for both of you :)
