What does Supervised Release Mean?

My son was sentenced to 10 years in custody and then 10 years supervised release. Does that mean 10 years in a group home, or he will be on parole, or both?

He has a 10 year prison sentence to serve; then after the 10 year prison obligation has been taken care of, he will serve 10 years under the supervision of a probation officer. I am not sure what you mean by group home, but the 10 years probation will be served in the community and he will live like any other citizen---except for all the restrictions.

While on probation, he is considered to still be in the custody of the DOC or the BOP. They can come to the house any time and search without a warrant, etc. While he will live within the community, he will not have all the civil protections that a normal person would have until he completes his period of supervised release.

Supervised Release is like probation in that he can be violated and sent back to prison. He will have to follow the rules and pay close attention o the PO. They have a tendency to change their instructions and rules almost at will.
I took notes during every meeting and read them back to he PO before I left.
