My take:

This is just an end around what the Washington state congress had set up in their registration laws. If they wanted tier 1 info to be available to everyone they would've have done so. If you disagree with it, talk to your state representatives. The judge was interpreting what the legislature had intended by their registration bills and I think he got it right.

Nevertheless, it makes sense intuitively that we need to punish sex offenders more, that they deserve whatever they get. I'm not going to disagree with that point, but I think society deserves better than getting what comes from punishing sex offenders more. What I mean is that if sex offenders are not allowed to build a life and have community ties, they are more likely NOT less likely to commit more sex crimes. Research shows that sex offenders re-offend at a low rate already, but that rate goes down further if they build community ties. It may seem like a repugnant idea to give sex offenders a break, but what if it means less victims? Do we want retribution or less victims?

And if you disagree and think screw sex offenders, again I don't disagree with you, think about this:

Have we had enough of people dying needlessly? Why not register all DUI's offenders, they kill many more people than sex offenders do every year. Hundreds of children die every year from drunk drivers, what about the children? If it only saves one child, shouldn't we register, shame, and take DUI offenders driving privileges away?
