Trying to keep calm

Not a good day. Really stressed out. I'm off work this week due to a scheduled shutdown of the plant I work at (happens 2x a yr). Found out that my husband is not time cut eligible due to a law that was passed in 2008. Please correct me if I'm wrong but a person can kill another person and get time cuts but a person touches another person and ur discriminated against. I just don't get it. No wonder I don't want to be around other people. Just trying to get through this week and get bk to work so I can put my "blinders" bk on and get through the next 7 yrs. I pray everyday that our relationship will be approved so we can be %100 bk together.

I feel the same as you, is not fair. I know my bf was excited about it, he got 6 yrs, he was just transferred , he is only served almost 3 mo. I feel desperate and lost without him. And is that is not enough he has to register.... why register? I would rather for him been on probation for life and not put a sticker that does not belong to someone that didn’t do it. I know he is worth the wait .

The laws pertaining to sex offenses and the sex offender registry are based on emotion and on fear---not facts. These laws are also politically driven, so you will find that they are not based on common sense.

The media---cable TV---has instilled into the general viewer’s mind that everyone on the sex offender registry is a child molester just waiting to snatch up some child on the playground. They also repeat a statistic which most people believe, that a sex offender will ALWAYS re-offend with a recidivism rate of over 50 %. This, of course, is not true. The recidivism rate for sex offenders is approximately 5%, with only murderers having a lower re-offense rate.

These laws are politically driven b/c of the fear the public has of sex offenders. The public wants the politicians to pass legislation to protect their children, which the lawmakers are all to happy to pass. After all, passing these ridiculous and draconian laws will keep them in favor with the voting public and get them re-elected.

When laws are based on emotion rather than fact, things such as the sex offender registry are introduced.

I and many others are fighting these laws as fast as we can, but it is difficult. I will tell you this----we have made significant progress in the past several years through court decisions in our favor. The tide IS turning, and as more courts and judges see that the registry is punishment, things will continue to get better.

We just all have to hang on and stick together until we can affect more changes.

Murders leave prison with no further involvement with the corrections system except their parole or probation. SOS, no matter how minor the offense, are saddled with labels and restrictions. It makes no sense, it sucks, but that is reality.
