I was never at a halfway house as I discharged my entire 20 year sentence while in prison, but I have talked to guys who were sent to a halfway house.
If an inmate is intent on following the rules to a “T” and is not one of these guys who likes to push the envelope, I think he will do reasonably well. I am sure your guy will do fine, but he will have to be careful.
Many see a halfway house as a good way to trick your time off and wind up back in prison, but that can also happen with probation. A halfway house does have a lot more rules than a prison environment and it is easier to screw up at a halfway house, but a decent guy can do well at a halfway house if he is careful.
As far as what one can bring to a halfway house, each one may have different rules. You will have to find out which house he is going and ask them there to be sure.

But they tried to get him to sign up anyway. He got out of it. I don't think its mandatory?
The guys run outside when the ice cream man comes by on Saturday. They order pizza and Jimmy Johns subs all the time.
He had terrible anxiety when he got there, the change and hearing terrible stories, but he is now so much more relaxed and is beginning to be his old self. There isn't any drama there, he says the guys just want to get home.
