I am so happy your father escaped going to prison. Prison just opens another can of worms and gives the family more to worry about.
Sex offender probation is hard, but it is DOABLE. Just remember---doable. Not pleasant, not fun, not a walk in the park-----but doable.
And the probation will not last forever. There IS an end game to all this, no matter what you have been told. The registry is much better than probation, so that will give him a goal to look forward to----to get through his probation.
Take baby steps and take one step at a time. Try not to look too far in the future because that just causes you to worry about things that might never happen.
There will be times when he hates his PO, but he will get through this. He just has to take it slow, take one day at a time, and exercise some common sense.
God Bless you and your family,

Just take one day and issue at a time. It does end.
The distance is from the edge of the school grounds to the edge of his property in many states. Again it depends on the state.

In Ohio, a registrant cannot reside within 1,000 feet of a school. The distance is measured from the property line of the school to the property line of the offender’s residence.
