They came for the SO, I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a SO, then they came for the child abusers, I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a child abuser.......then they came for me!

It is a common misconception that ANY felon has lost the right to vote. Every state is different and many people are quite surprised that they are not barred from the democratic process. It all depends on the individual's personal point in the journey and the state they are in. Maine and Vermont allow felons to vote while in prison, while others have a blanket ban on felons voting for the rest of their life. Most states are in-between.

I think it's like a lot of other things. It does cost the taxpayers money. However, a few get rich off of things like investing in monitoing companies etc. And, it usually gets the politicians the votes. And as long as the ones getting rich of off it can sell it to the masses as being for their safety they will continue to do so

My point though is it is not the greasing of a few people's pockets that is propping up the need for the registry. A state making even a few million dollars off of it's registrants is not big business. Think about how much money they have to pay out for welfare of the families of RSOs because the RSOs have a hard time getting work. It would be WAY more cost effective to not "make" the money on them and not pay as much out in welfare.

It is not the fees that is driving and creating a need for the registry. It is people's fear that has brought us to where we are now and politicians are playing off that to win elections by being "tough" on crime.

I also think the registry was used as a "test run" of sorts. A way for the goverment to bluntly take away certain citizens constitutional rights , and see if they used children's safety as their justification, just how much abuse would the people not only tolerate but actually encourage. In the beginning it really could have gone either way. But now they know that the majority of the people in this country are more then willing to sign over their natural born rights in exchange for what they believe is "safety".
