For over four decades, this country waged a misguided War on Drugs, which was a miserable failure. This "war" cost this country trillions of dollars and put thousands upon thousand of our young men and women in prison for possession of small amounts of drugs. Many of these young people suffered from an addiction, and medical treatment and education would have been more beneficial than prison, but that is not what happened.
During this time, we saw the advent of the militarized police SWAT teams barging in on citizens and an attack on the Fourth Amendment. At the same time, private prisons began to emerge to house the many people convicted for drugs.
The government for years used faulty scientific studies and played hard and fast with the rules to demonize marijuana and its users. If some of you are old enough and you ever get the chance, there is a movie called "Reefer Madness" that displays the total ignorance of the issue.
Here it is on youtube:

Just watch a few minutes of that foolishness. At the time, in 1937, many people thought that movie was a true representation of the effects of Marijuana.
Now people are beginning to wise up and see the folly of our failed "War on Drugs." Yes, this war is till going, but it has dissipated considerably in the last several years.
Not to worry, folks, we have a new war, a war against an enemy so insidious and powerful that it is enabling perverts and pedophiles to steal our children's future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sarcasm off) It is a new and improved war. It is called the War on Child Pornography.
The government is using the same methods to vilify child porn defendants as they did years ago to demonize drug users----faulty statistics, sensational reporting, and just a general state of incorrect facts that are not supported by legitimate research.
And not to worry folks, the government is now using its same tried and true methods to carry out this War on Child Pornography. Police SWAT teams, the evisceration of the Fourth Amendment, propaganda in the media, and loooooooooong prison sentences.
I do not support true child pornography; nobody does. But the punishments for possession are absolutely ridiculous.
Some of the images that are deemed as child pornography in a legal sense are not what most people think of when they hear the words child pornography. A young man taking a picture of his girlfriend coming out of the shower with a towel around her waist and her breasts exposed may legally be child pornography, but c'mon people, labeling that as child porn is just insane. There are other examples and I am sure a few of the posters can cite examples.
It is just as much an outrage to place a young man in prison for several years for LOOKING, only looking, at a naughty picture of an underage person as it was twenty years ago when the country locked up minor drug defendants for many years for possession of marijuana. In both instances, the general public agreed with the government because they people have been progagandized to belive that all marijuana users were potential drug kingpins and all defendants in a child pornography case are all potential perverts just waiting to nab one of their children to rape them.
There is nothing really scientific about this. The War on Drugs has morphed into the War on Child Pornography.
You see, we always have to have a "war" in this country going. There has to be a continuing war to feed billions and billions of dollars in the form of federal grants to feed groups like law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. And hell, let's not forget private prison corporations. They surely want their piece of the pie. After all, they lobby hard for more laws which will keep their prisons full and making the most profit.
This country is a joke and a laughingstock to any other civilized nation in the world. The America I once knew has become so damn disgusting that I don't even watch the news anymore.

"Environmental activists face up to ten years in prison for glitter-covered banner"
Oklahoma City police charged two activists on Friday for enacting a “terrorism hoax” after the pair unfurled a banner covered in glitter at a fossil-fuel company’s headquarters. Authorities took the glitter as evidence of a possible biochemical attack.
A couple of months ago there was a common bank robbery in my town and the media called it an act of terror. They are using a very fine line here - something we also need to be concerned about.
You are absolutely right. I have noticed a disturbing trend in this county to label many crimes an "act of terror."
You can bet the media and politicians will milk this for all its worth and the result will be some ridiculously long prison sentences for minor crimes.

It is all about power and control when all the fluff is boiled out of it...
Fear is being exploited big time here in this country, but then hey, hasn't it been exploited all through human history? This is not new in the big scheme of things, but it is new to many American citizens who all their lives believed they lived and worked in a free society. Then one day, bam, they are a target of this exploitation and then their eyes are opened and the ugly truth settles in that our country is a great pretender, proficient at soothing the masses while stripping all of us of our freedoms.
In the mean time some group of fat cats are raking in the profits and buying more power and control through our corrupt system. Enough said, I just wish there were a solution to the problem. Is there one? I have lost faith in our political system, but still have hope that we can make a difference some how.
Oh, and winconsin, even though your description of our politicians reaction to their discovery of the "new" jackpot was graphic and some what "mature" in nature, I really found it humorous and also enlightening. They are a very lustful group and their cravings can never be satisfied. They just can't get enough and are willing to create many victims in their pursuit of more. Will the real criminal please stand up......but they never will because that is suppose to remain a secret. As long as they can keep their secret they will continue to get away with it. Maybe we need a public registry for crooked politicians, after all they never stop offending and are a threat to everyone (sarcasm of course as registries are in-just and a violation of our constitutional freedoms).
Respectfully,
Lina
It is kind of like throwing cold water on a barking dog. The transition from being a proud citizen of this country to one of extreme disappointment is a very rapid metamorphosis.
It is almost like we were blind, but can now see clearly.
This is when we learn that everything we have been taught growing up about law enforcement and our criminal justice system was a lie. Cops are NOT our friends and the criminal justice system in this country exudes anything but justice.
We lose the innocence we once had. We see things as they really are rather than how we would like for them to be-----or how we thought they were.
We see this country for what really is----a power hungy bully that loves to stomp on people when they are already down. These DAs are ruthless and the politicians are no better.
It all brings us down to reality. No more fairy tales after being involved with the criminal justice system in this country.

That is why these "wars" never work. If you focus on hate, you get hate. That's what a war is.
Could it be that people are afraid of not having someone to be afraid of, i.e., to hate?
At first, that seems crazy, but think about it…. We've become so accustomed to this kind of thinking that we can't get ourselves out of the box.
Every day we have the choice to walk in love or in fear. When you walk in love, you attract love. When you walk in fear, well, you get these "wars".
Personally, I'd rather focus on walking in love.
I wonder which group of people will be the first one targeted for detainment? I have no idea, I imagine whomever speaks the loudest, I guess... How will we know if someone we know was detained? Will notification be made to family members who try filing a missing persons report? Doubtful.
I think the time for speaking out may have passed already. I guess time will tell
Anyways.... Can you believe the nerve of those duck dynasty fellas???? (that was sarcasm)
If so many people weren't duped by this junk, it would be funny. The other day I was in someone's home and the TV was on FOX news. There was some fire marshall on there talking about how Obamacare was going to force volunteer fire departments to close. Then, there would be chaos and our homes would burn down. Seriously!
Apparently, the ill-logic is that, in this guy's opinion, if people have to pay more for insurance, they will stop volunteering. He drew this to an extreme conclusion just for the purpose of controlling and scaring people.
Recently, there was a study done that looked at viewers of FOX news and viewers of other news. They were questioned about their beliefs. Of course, the people who watched FOX news were caught up in those ideas and their opinions were ultra conservative. The people who watched regular news were caught up in their own negativity, but were significantly more liberal.
Both groups stopped watching for a week. After only one week, both groups views were more liberal and there was actually little difference between them.
Wish I'd saved that article… Anyway, it just shows how susceptible we are to these kinds of influences.
PS. I don't watch TV news.
Apparently you misunderstood what the Fire chief was saying....It is not the firefighters who have to pay. Obummer care will FORCE the Fire Dept/city to provide the coverage and most cities with volunteer FDs can't afford it, my town included.
The only problem with that is that volunteers are not paid. Obamacare cannot force the Fire Department to pay health insurance for unpaid workers.
