As a society, we want to protect children as they are our greatest asset.
When some charlatan posing as a lawmaker wants to get a bill passed against sex offenders that will make him look "tough on crime," you hear the same old worn out phrase----"for the children" or "we must protect the children" or "if it saves one child it is worth it."
These little catchy slogans are invaluable when the government wants to pass a law that infringes on our civil rights. Works every time.
But we don't seem so interested in the children's benefit when some politician can capitalize by placing kids on the sex offender registry. And they don't seem to care about the children of registrants who suffer hardships---thanks to "the list"---through no fault of their own----except to love their father. Don't the children of registrants count? Are they not children? Do they not possess the same flesh and blood as any other child?
The truth is that this country does a lot of lip service in favor of children, but we don't really give a damn about children.
If we did, we would be allocating large amounts of money for educating our children instead of using it for more "worthwhile" purposes of manufacturing a Drone to blow up a few people in the MidEast.
It costs this country approximately $30,000 a year to house one inmate, which would pay for one person's college education for a year. We spend far more on prisons than we do for education for our younger folks and we get nothing in return except a member of a private prison corporation patting a "tough on crime" politician on the back for passing more oppressive laws or making more laws a felony so they can keep their warehouses full and keep their wallets nice and fat.
If the children were so important, we, as a society, would be funding more and more programs so that children would not go to bed hungry at night, but we don't. Instead the federal government is giving large amounts of money to the states and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force at the state level to entrap men on the internet.
I read an article that said 16 million children, 22% of all children in this country live in a family below the poverty level. If we cared about the children, this would not be happening.
So, see we really do not care about the plight of the children. Poiticians and our leaders just use it as a ruse, a red herring, to keep getting re-elected year after year.
This has become the American way.

You and I know this whole biz is a giant control drama. None of it will change until more is known and understood about what a hypocrisy it truly is....and then it will have to be the will of the people that changes it because making it into a law just entrenches the insanity.
And it is truly insane. Your topic is spot-on, Rew.
Meanwhile we have kids in tornado alley who die because nobody thought it might be prudent to put a shelter under the school. Or, more likely, they didn't want to spend the money.
