He has his 2nd food visit (we get to bring outside food in) coming up in September. He wants a bucket of chicken and nothing else.
When he was able to get commissary he would eat as healthy as possible, even tho most of the stuff for sale there was crap, sugar, cookies, etc..
When he tried to eat the regular meals the patties of whatever meat were unedible and mostly soy. Once in a while he would have broccoli but the guards would cut off the top parts for their meals and my son would get the stems.
These are not the types of food that are healthy by any means. They are not very filling and not a balanced diet.
One summer they had a program where the inmates could plant a garden and eat the vegetables from the garden. The inmates did all the work in the garden and they took care of the garden under the supervision of a CO. That did not work as the COs STOLE all the food and took it home to their own families.

He tries to get as much fruits and vegetables he can get, because most of the time the food is crap.
He lives visiting day, as we have a variety of good food to choose from (and not all junk).
BoP 'national menu' food is not any better, or worse - just different.
