My son has been on probation for the last month, and as far as we know, everything is fine. No problem with his parole officer.

However, last Sunday a deputy showed up at the house and asked if he was there (he wasn't, he was visiting with family). Then, after not leaving the house for three days, we went to a doctor appointment today and naturally a registered letter came that we could not sign for, again from the sheriff's department.

He can't get the letter until tomorrow, but we're all wringing our hands, worried that it's going to be something terrible. Should we be afraid?

I don't know what it could be, but PLEASE, if they want to talk to him and if they ask him anything at all about a crime or anything of that nature, you tell him to tell them, "I do not talk to cops without my attorney present. I want an attorney."

These are the magical words and they are all he has to say to them. Do not allow them to get into a debate with them about why he should talk or co-operate. Just say the magical words. Then shut up.

Then he needs to shut up and not say another word.

Am I right in assuming that they thought he had violate parole they would just come and get him, not send a letter?

I am fairly sure if it was an arrest or he violated parole, they would just come and get him.

It could be a subpoena or a summons. Or they could have some property of his.

Or it could be a lawsuit from someone. People in the sheriff's office sometimes deliver documents or court orders if someone is being sued.

Has he had a car accident lately?

Did they confiscate some property when he was arrested?

Police usually hand deliver some subpoenas or summons, so it could be that.

If he stayed at your house for three days after the deputy appeared, I am sure that if they wanted to arrest him, they would have come back in person.

There was a computer that was taken (though by a different sheriff department) that was supposed to be returned. No car or other issues, and his PO and court appointed therapist have both been very reasonable.

Fingers cross that it's the computer.

I was thinking it might be the computer they confiscated when they seized all this digital devices. He would probably have to sign some papers for it, so I hope that is it.

Trust me I would be freaked out too - has he complied with all the rules and been home during any curfews etc.? If yes then I know it is worrisome but you will know soon - in fact I doubt they would send a registered letter for any violation or arrest of anything - if it is the property you are lucky they are seeking you out - I had to go to court and fight for mine

If your son has only been on parole for a short time it might be a proof of residency. Meaning they want to prove that he resides there? This is just a thought!
