Oklahoma has completely halted the death penalty indefinitely until they can get their problems fixed. I would not be surprised if they just decide to abolish it as it causes too many problems and we have the alternative of LWOP-----life without the possibility of parole.
The registry is slowly creeping toward reform. Too many mamas and daddies have had young teen sons snared in crimes with a 15 or 16 year old where the son's life was ruined because of a sex crime conviction and the consequences of the sex offender registry.
The main reason these Romeo and Juliet laws are being attacked, which will ultimately cause the sex offender registry to be reformed, is that everyone----mothers, fathers, older people, etc,----can RELATE to an injustice such as Zach Anderson when an older teen's life is almost ruined because of the registry.
People can relate to this crime as everyone has had sex at one time or the other and many of us older folks can remember when we might have had sex as foolish teenagers with a much younger person, Today these folks would be deemed sex offenders.
The fact that Zach Anderson's parents had the courage to get out there in front of the media to tell their story cannot be overplayed as one of the reasons the registry is being examined closely by many people.
I think every common sense person will agree that criminalizing normal teen behavior as far as sex is concerned helps nobody and is counterproductive to everyone involved.
Change in anything comes easier and faster when a high percentage of the population can relate to the injustice.
Prison reform is a much tougher sell, but at least changes are being discussed. We will see, but these are certainly interesting times we live in.
We, as a group, need to remember that, while we may have spats and disagreements from time to time, we are all in this together and we all need each other. We cannot allow anything to hamper our desire to fight for fairer laws regarding sex offenders.
