Although the author got one wish they are locking up sex offenders for longer. Minimum sentences for CP, etc.
I wish more of these articles would be published and in Main Street publications. (The Economist is one!)
It is not based on any research, valid studies, or facts; in fact, parts of the registry may actually be counter productive.
But the registry is a political animal. As long as the politicians feel as though they can garner votes in the next election and get re-elected by proposing and enacting all these laws, they will continue to do so.
Our movement has made its biggest strides in court decisions such as the Starkey decision here in Oklahoma. Ohio previously had a landmark decision in the Williams Supreme Court of Ohio decision, and Maryland seems to be following Oklahoma and Ohio's footsteps. In other words, we have made some progress IN SPITE of the politicians.
Until more people become educated and experience a family member affected by this silly "list", the politicians will continue to enact these laws.
Until then, other than court decisions, not much will change.
Just my opinion.

i know that there are a lot of people working and fighting to get the SO laws changed. i think for most all of them it's because they, themselves have been touched or were victims to the laws. like us they have found out and learned the far reaching and inadvertent consequences of the registry. and the over all harm that it does not just to the one who has to register but totally innocent bystanders.
i know i have been sharing to my FB page, a lot of the articles that i have come across. and i actually think that i have opened some eyes. an article that i shared not to long ago had a couple of comments that were the usual, "where there's smoke there's fire", "people convicted of 'sex' crimes can never be cured", "sex offenders should be locked away for life", etc. so in my comment back i covered some of the "sex crimes" that people are convicted of and that depending on the state will have to register for life, how that label affects everyone connected to that person. the age of some of the so called "offenders" and more. the couple of people who had commented negatively were really very surprised. so i passed on a couple of links to them.
i think one of the best ways that i can further the truth with what little knowledge and experience i have with this whole mess is to share articles and info to others via my FB page. at least until i learn more and become better experienced.
