In some states, a registrant cannot even be present within a certain amount of feet from a school, day care center, swimming pool, park, etc. In my state it is 300 feet, but I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted. Some states specify that for this buffer zone to be in effect, the registered citizen must have been convicted of only certain sex crimes, e.g. rape, molestation, or sexual assault of a child.
Some states will specify that for this to be in effect the registered citizen must be "loitering."
And some states will waive these buffer zones to allow the registered citizen to attend school functions for their children. Other states will allow it if he has permission from the principal or superintendent of the school.
Some states have the old catch-all rule, which states a registered citizen cannot be present where children regularly congregate.
This will give you an idea, but you can check the laws in your specific state, or contact the principal of the school.
