But I guess a story about R&J's is better than nothing.
It's an improvement since for all other 'crimes' kids as young as 14 can be arrested, adjudicated as adults and end up on the registry. (I don't know if that applies to mutual sexting?) And for any one adjudicated for a crime involving a child (even if the 'criminal was also legally a child) then the child is labeled a 'child molester' and is then automatically tier 3 and can never get off the registry if the state is in full compliance (and therefore eligible for additional $$$) under the AWA. They have basically decided to ignore evaluating for risk factors or any other 'ameliorating factors" and just gone back completely to "once a sex offender always a sex offender' put them in prison and then on the registry and throw away the key. R&J is better than nothing but...what about all the others railroaded by prosecutors anxious to get votes and fill the prisons.
I'm not religious but even I remember the story of how the / Pharasies and money changers were driven from the (religious) Temple. In the US under the AWA, the Politicians and money changers seem to have taken over the Temple of "justice." and prefer to go back to prejudice ignoring all the new brain science and even the old adage that "kids make mistakes" (heck even adults make mistake and grow from them) but given a chance kids especially will grow up to become responsible people (assuming we give then a chance to mature and don't forever beat them up. But I rant. JanetM
Hi Derek,
Thanks again for being so candid. As we discussed, I'm looking for a handful of registered offenders willing to open up about the circumstances around their conviction, the time they served and their life since registering. If anyone would feel more comfortable speaking with last name redacted or anonymously, that's fine too. I'll be in the office Saturday, then Tuesday onward. Feel free to give out my email to anyone who wants to set up a time.
Thanks,
Meera
