does anyone know about the "smart sentencing act"? as in how it will pertain to sex offenders?
Kelly has talked about it it lately in her last 5 or 6 letters. in the letter i got today, she said that one of the women there with her said that she was told that it will effect the sentences of incarcerated offenders and that for her (the other inmate) it will mean a reduction of 35% in her sentence. her's was a contact offense.

The bill does not repeal mandatory minimums, but it will reduce the ones already in force.
Twenty, 10 year, and five year mandatory minimum drug sentences will be reduced to 10 years, five years, and two years respectively.
This bill only affects federal crimes. Those prosecuted in state court will not be affected.
These provisions will not be retroactive and it will not include sex offenders.

I think what Kelly heard was that there has been talk for several years now that an inmate in a federal facility who now serves 85% of his sentence would have that reduced to 65%.
They have been talking about doing that for several years, but nothing has been done yet.
In prison, you hear all sorts of hopes/rumors through the grapevine and in the rumor mill. Most are not true.

Kelly keeps asking if i have seen anything about it or if it had been spoken of here. my stomach sinks and my heart aches at telling her that it's not going to help.
Believe me, I know how Kelly feels.
When I was in prison we would hear a different rumor about every couple of months. Usually it had to do with an increase in good time credits-----either that inmates with violent crimes would be getting the same amount of good time as inmates with non-violent crimes, that the number of good time credits for all would be increased, that there would be an early Christmas kick out and hundreds of inmates would be released, etc.
They all turned out to be just a rumor; actually wishful thinking at best.
We will just plug along and do what we can for Kelly and hope for the best.
