I identify so much with this attorney. I used to be a Republican because I believed that being Conservative was the "right" thing to do as a good pious Christian lady. FORGET IT!
The laws in my Louisiana are not based on any values except on a "feel good about how tough we are on crime" principle. It plays upon the ignorant and naive. I have never had any run in with the police or the criminal justice system, until my fiancee was wrongfully and capriciously accused of molesting his step daugther only because his ex wanted him out the of picture to spend his money freely. As a matter of fact the DA did present the excapultory evidence, but did not drop the charge. He was just given 7 years probation because in a civil law suit against him he admitted that he smoked pot in front of the minor child to calm down his tremors stemming from his Parkinsons.
Recently, he moved from Texas to Louisiana to face the most ridiculous living conditions ever! He has been placed on leg monitor, and was elevated from a low level tier to the 3, being the most aggregious. REALLY??! He was just hospitalized for diabetic issues and when discharged he needed care at my home, but no, he was not allowed to come here because it is not an approved place. It is 20 feet in the radius of a school. SERIOUSLY??! The man can't even take care of himself and he can't come to a place where I can help him? As an aside, we found a place that is "acceptable" to the 1000 feet registry and we are moving there next week. What a stupid law that is!
All that fear mongering in Louisiana. For what?! For the DA's to say that they "win 100% of their cases" or is it for the Legislators to be get back to their positions of power and privilege by stating that they are "tough on crime" and "protecting the children" or is it for our Governor who wants to pander to the right wing to get elected President. (HA! what a joke)
Thank you for letting me vent! Thank you for sharing the video! I hope that one good thing that happens in Louisiana is that good people stand up for fairness and justice. Yes, please compensate this poor man whom we treated so wrong. Give him what he deserves to build his life. Apologize and beg for his forgiveness and ask God to guide him and you as we forge onward.
The author notes that the number of executions had begun to fall in many places by the 17th century, and he argues that this decline was not due to public sentiment or the advent of prisons and workhouses to punish less serious crimes. The author argues that authorities back in the day were less compelled to impose the death penalty because they were more secure in their authority and didn't need to impose such penalties in order to maintain their authority.
I wonder if today's "tough on crime" politicians are that way not because of any overwhelming public sentiment for harsh penalties, but because they themselves are insecure and feel a need to impose such penalties as a way to secure their own authority.
Funny that you mentioned about those that protest too much.
In prison, there was always a few guys that said they literally hated gays. They said they wanted to kill them, run them off the yard, and just generally run their mouth to let everyone know their position on gays.
Ninety percent of those guys in that gay bashing group were sneaking around and having sex with them. It almost never failed.
I suppose they were using their hatred as sort of a cover so they could have their fun time with the homosexuals and they thought nobody would ever suspect it.
