Unfortunately it is really hard to find an attorney to do anything pro bono. I haven't found any in my neck of the woods.

I looked into going into law school so I could help out people, but 200k to do so with not many jobs available. No thanks.

I am considering law school but a back route. I will have to take the bar in CA and do some type of federal work until I can apply to another state. I am finishing up my degree in public policy now. Only 5 courses left! I hope to help change some of these draconian laws!

If I knew back then what I know now, I would have been a criminal defense trial attorney instead of a getting into the field of pharmacology.

And I would have been a good one. I would have fought like hell for my client regardless if he was innocent or guilty; I just don't like the way our government runs over people, especially in the justice system.

The problem is there is over punishment and no chance for redemption. Society must learn to forgive in time and allow healing for all. Those that continue to punish have no idea that there are so many innocent people affected by the punishment...families etc who have to also experience loss and pain...if that makes sense.

Sometimes I think it would have been better for my boyfriend to not have had an attorney and defended himself. Would have done a better job I think!

It's never to late to change professions. If you have the desire and drive!

Calling around, sending letters out, etc most likely won't land you someone willing to do pro Bono but will most likely get you someone who might cut their rates.

I've only heard of one attorney who worked Pro Bono, and that was AFTER the family already spent tens of thousands of dollars.

Maybe this is thread could be a path towards the Pro-se movement. With the internet being what it is today I know darn right well that I could do a better job for my son were I allowed to defend him.

I found this out: With an attorney we filed 4 motions and won 1. It cost me $7,000 for that.
Filing Pro-Se and using our own wits we filed 4 motions and won 1 and it cost me NOTHING.

You are not going to win every battle every time. If you file pro-se then assume you will loose 3 of 4 and fight for the one you want the hardest. Throw in some you know will will loose but fight for the one you have the best chance of winning.

Do you homework. remember that a lawyer works for YOU and not the other way around.
