I don't live there, but from everything I have read and researched, Oregon is one of the best states for sex offenders.

Of course, stay away from the Bible Belt, especially Florida. Ohio and Illinois are not good either. Utah is not bad from what I have read.

A few of the New England states are fairly reasonable.

If a registrant lives in a state which is very repressive to sex offenders, I always advise them to move to a more favorable state if possible. Of course, with many registrants, moving is just not feasible or possible. They may have a decent job where they are at or they may not want to leave their families---which I fully understand.

I advise them to move because every year the legislature will be passing more and more restrictive laws regarding sex offenders and you can be sure that many of those laws will be retroactive, which will affect ALL offenders.

Why hang around in a state that is getting unreasonably tougher on registrants every year with no end in sight? Why subject yourself to that? My feeling is that life is too short to allow the lawmakers to make a registrant's life more miserable every year.

Of course, if a registrant is on probation or doing paper time, their probation requirements will be much the same as it was in the original state so moving would not be that beneficial.

Moving also has its psychological advantages. I tried to come back to the same town from which I was convicted, but there were too many bad memories and it became painful at times. I would see someone even remotely involved with my case----or just an old enemy----and it would ruin my entire day.

I felt much better when I just started all over in a new community.

Some people consider moving an example of allowing them to "run you out of town." That is really ridiculous. Moving out of a place with bad memories is just making it much easier for a better life; no reason to hang around and allow people to use you as a psychological "punching bag."

Another consideration would be once a state that is deemed a "Good" state to be in would quickly be overwhelmed by RSOLs and then the public out cry would quickly pass laws that stop the inflow. Hopefully they would not be retroactive but you never know....

Stay out of the Bible Belt, stay out of the floriduh and California. Go to the NE or the NW parts of the country if you can.

Avoid Maine. It is toxic here if you are a sex offender. They are very harsh here on SOs. So out of all the New England States, it is best to avoid moving to Maine at any cost possible. Once my hubby is off probation we plan to get out of this crap of a state.

I would also like to know more about Oregon as this is a state that I have thought about my son moving to when released in a year and a half. My son said he heard Oregon was tough on RSOs, but better than AZ where he is now. In AZ they like to keep them in prison, as this is the number one money maker in AZ.

Thank you guys for your input. AZ sucks for SO's...just sayin...I've read a lot about Oregon, and we are very enthusiastic about what we've read. It seems like a state we can really settle down in. We just want to be left alone, and mind our own business.....of course, when probation is finished...and off paper......

The majority of SO's in AZ receive life-time probation which goes with the SO to whatever state he travels too. It is a NIGHTMARE and worse then just being a RSO. If he wants to settle in Oregon he needs to get an inter state transfer though the DOC before getting out of prison and the new state has to agree to except him. In order to get off of life-time probation he has to go through the court system in AZ which can be done from long distance. Most states do not have life-time probation - there are only a couple that I know of. If he has a Federal charge it is much easier because they do not have life-time probation. My recommendation would be to get the heck out of here as soon as he can. Go through the probation system in Oregon if at all possible or some other state.
