But to say she got off lighter than if she was a man, no doubt she did. I think we have to take into consideration harm done. I think that boys, especially boys at that age think about having sex with girls more so than the reverse. I personally believe with no psychological research to back this up, that relationships like this are less coercive than relationships between a man and a girl. Just my personal opinion. Would love to hear what others think.
By "nothing but a fine and the register" it's simply my opinion that it was very lenient for grooming a young teen with serious mental difficulties under her care. A fine can be classed as a caution which is 2 years of registering or it can be classed as a community order which is 5 years. The Sheriff decides on which one.
A lifetime of registration for anyone except violent predators is just an injustice, pure and simple.
The disparity in the sentences between men and women who have committed basically the same crime is an indictment on our criminal justice system, but the proper sentence should be in line with the one the young lady received.
We have a bad habit in this country of not making the punishment fit the crime.
The lifetime registration is absolutely ridiculous and considering the nature of her crime, I cannot think of any rationale for placing her on the registry for life. She certainly is not a continuing menace or danger to society and the chances are close to zero that she will ever re-offend.
But politicians----and the people who elect them----love the sex offender registry. Being an advocate of the registry is a sure fire way to get re-elected each term for the politicians and gives the losers in life a web site to browse on Saturday night in an attempt to remind them that a group of people are suffering as much as they are. I believe "misery loves company" can be applied to the losers who get great joy in seeing a registrant's photograph on the registry. It makes their failures in life seem trivial, I suppose.
As far as serving time in prison in lieu of probation, sure I would rather be in prison a few years more than serve a long probation term. Why? It's simple, prison is a lot easier than sex offender probation. In prison there are no polygraphs, POs do not show up at your door at all hours of the night, no fees and fines to pay, no curfews, no being told where you can and cannot sleep at night or live, etc. And guess what? We had no Halloween restrictions either!!!!
We have turned the registration process into a form of "virtual incarceration" where the government can legally keep an eye on every registrant without having to pay for them being in prison.
Regarding the entire sex offender situation, the politicians are happy as it gets them re-elected, the losers in life are happy as it gives them someone they can look down on, the middle class do not care since they are just trying to survive, so everyone seems to be content.
Except the registrants, their families, and the people who support them.

I don't know if you misread my post, but I said that, other than the lifetime registry----which I did not agree with, I think she received a fair sentence for her crime.
For Christ's sake, she only received a two year probation sentence---no prison time. Disregarding the lifetime registry which I mentioned, you don't think a two year PROBATION with NO prison time is fair?
What do you think would be a fair sentence? Nothing? I think she got a sweetheart of a deal.
I was pointing out that she got the deal that men committing the same crimes should always receive. I did NOT say that it was a fair sentence if you compare her crime to a guy who commits the same kind of crime and receives 10 years prison time; in that case a guy would receive a bad deal.
What I did say is that a two year probation sentence for a crime of these circumstances is fair and should be the punishment for BOTH males and females who are guilty
I don't know how much more fair----lenient---a prosecutor can be than to give someone pleading out to a sex crime only a sentence of two years probation.

I don't wish a more harsh---and unfair sentence----for her just because guys are receiving a harsher sentence or even prison time. Instead of wanting people like her to get increased sentences in comparison with men who commit the same crimes, I would like for the men to receive the same sentence as she did.
