He will have heavy duty supervision the next 10 years. Everything he does will be monitored. If he is lucky enough to have access to the internet, that will also be monitored. His aftercare therapy will be extremely intense. He will have it drilled in him how any small mistake will send him back to prison. I think the best way to cope is knowing that these safeguards will make it much less likely he will reoffend. Plus, people who are CP offenders generally reoffend at a very low rate, almost less than any other crime, contrary to popular opinion.
He won't make it through probation, though, if he doesn't follow all of the rules to a tee and that is his responsibility alone.
Mom about anything. She hates talking about this.
As far as "what if he reoffends", assume he won't. He'll be hearing those concerns from his probation officer and his therapist. It's been very helpful with my son to tell him that I have total confidence he won't reoffend. That I have faith in him. Believe it or not, psychologically, that has helped him a great deal. Let other people do that worrying for you because there will be people in his life who will track his every thought and move.
We've been down this road. Any friends we have lost were not worth having in this first place. My wife and I have talked about it and anyone who abandoned us (which wasn't many) were shaky friendships to begin with. The one's that stick by you; they are the one's to hang on to.
