If your son is doing much time, he will make a life for himself in prison, and the visits won't mean as much. Toward the end of my eight year sentence, I really did not care for visits that much. I hated that people would go out of their way to come see me, when I was doing find. I did not need the support that visits bring.
Your money would be better spent just sending your son some money every month. He will appreciate that and in the long run, that will do him more good. The good that a few extra dollars will do will be much more important than a few more visits.
Nothing worse than being flat broke in prison---cannot even afford a damn cup of coffee or a box of Little Debbies.
There really is no need to upend your life just because your son is in prison. He will learn quick enough to be a "big boy" and the visits will not mean that much to him. Not that he is anything but a big boy now, but he will acclimate to prison
On another note, letters are very, very important; maybe almost as important as visits. An advantage of letters is that an inmate can go back and read and re-read them and relive the idea that he is not forgotten and someone still cares enough to write.
Letters are sacred to an inmate. Write, write, and then write some more.
