I don't for a minute think you son's life is "fucked" as you put it. I think his life will be different and he will certainly have some hurdles, but life as a sex offender on the registry is totally survivable.
I was in prison for eight years and my life was OK when I came out and began living in the free world.
Your son will get a job and while it might not be the kind of job he always wanted or had planned, he will still have employment to support him and his family. I know he plans to work with your business, but later on he might want to work elsewhere.
Survival or living a successful life while on the registry is mostly about his attitude and how he carries himself. He can be angry all the time, mad at the world, see an impeding doom in every situation and be miserable the rest of his life or he can be upbeat, never give up, LEARN TO PLAY THE SYSTEM to his advantage and be successful with a happy life. Much of this is up to him.
Once he is released, if he acts like an idiot, dresses and has the appearance of a hooligan, and is loud and obnoxious, then yes, he will be seen as an ex-con and sex offender---and he will wind up with no friends because nobody wants to be around him. If he is polite, holds his head up high, is genuinely nice to others, then he will be seen as just another young man who made a mistake.
I know your son is a good kid that got caught up in this sex offender hysteria. I am certain that all the sons of the mothers that post here are pretty good kids. How do I know? Because not only do most of the mothers here seem sensible and caring---and I know they love their son---but also because trashy people would not take the time or have any inclination to even post on these boards--they would not care enough.
People tend to criticize and be hateful to people they do not like or care for anyway, but they also tend to make excuses for the mistakes of a person that they truly like and respect. Your son needs do the things that make people like him and many will overlook his mistake.
After all, he only downloaded a few naughty pictures; it is not as if he raped a two year old. Reasonable people will understand that. I said "reasonable' people. There will be those not so reasonable. Ignore them and continue to do what is right.
Yes, people harshly judge registrants and he will have hurdles in life, but no hurdle will be insurmountable. If he finds out living with you in the city does not work out because of nosey neighbors and busybodies, help him find a place a mile or two out of town in a rural area away from all the nutcases. If he finds it difficult to gain employment, he can start a business and be self-employed. Problem solved. I know you already have a business and that would be a good start for him.
But this registry is only doom and gloom if you make it that way. Yes, there are many things he cannot do while on the registry, but there are many things he CAN do also.
I have learned in both Vietnam and in prison that we must sometimes "make our own happiness" and turn a bad situation into a tolerable one.
I am 1000% on your side, and I have faith in both you and your son. My hope is that he comes home soon and you two can have the joyous reunion you are entitled.

Naked Bike rides are ok with children watching? yet people like my son gets years of their lives taken away for bull shit?
I think I have the right to be pissed about it all.
I even read that one high school has put out a policy that the streaking will be dealt with. Before it only happened on a seniors last day of school, but its becoming more common. Yet, elsewhere he will be reported and will have to register.
Denver had this, but I think now they have to at least cover their 'Business'....
Ain't nobody wants to see this old man Nekkid....
