Rew could speak a lot about what your son can do to keep himself safe inside, especially at a low level prison.

Hubby came up with a good cover story that fits the time frame given, and not something outside his knowledge (he wouldn't use a drug crime). He never bet, and aligned himself with other Christians (safest place).

He will do fine. Rew can give you more info about prison, as I don't remember them all, but they do help a lot.

My then 20 y.o. son went to federal prison for accidentally downloading child porn. He got 30 months... and I was worried. He's very sensitive and he thought he would not make it out, but he did. A good cover story is important.
Is your son federal or state? How old is he ? My son was lucky to have met a few guys in there who watched his back and showed him the ropes... which usually happens. My son went to low so he didn't have to deal with real hard core stuff and most of those guys incarcerated just want to do their time and get out so they're not looking for trouble. I have a couple 'adopted' inmates because of my son's friendship with others he met inside.

Ditto: keep your head down, keep to yourself, learn the ropes. Keep to a couple of friends, they might figure why you're in, but don't ask.. This is best. A good roomie is a blessing, I always showed my appreciation for them/that w/ an occasional note or card esp. at holidays. It's hard at first, I won't lie. Mine was @ a medium b/c of health issues. My son is serving 15 years federal. When he first went in, his "story" was part of a ring stealing/selling credit card info. He is still in a county facility awaiting transfer to a federal facility, but he's been in about 17 months and as far as I know, hasn't had any real issues.

My son got 3 years for downloading cp. He is at a minimum facility and is doing well. He wants to get out, of course, but he hasn't had any issues at all except he had a pair of shoes stolen. He is not one to retaliate but one of his "friends" in there was and found out who took his shoes and jumped the guy. So all ended well and I simply ordered my son another pair of shoes! The family writes him, i keep money on his books and money in his phone account and several of us go visit him. If he minds his own and generally tries to get along he will be okay. I was always told that blacks and whites stay within your own and you had better not cross that but when my sons shoes were stolen one of the black guys in his pod came up to him and said.....why did they take your shoes? You are nice to everyone! So try not to worry. Unless your son is a troublemaker he should be fine!

Sex offenders in prison do much better now than when I was in prison 20 years ago. If you think back 20 years ago, about the only real sex crimes were rape or some type of molestation. But today, with all the CP and Internet solicitation convictions because of the Internet, the prisons are flooded with sex offenders. As a result, it is easier for them to serve their time without much of a problem.

Most sex offenders will do well if they mind their own business, act like OK guys, and don't do something stupid. Many sex offenders do not get hurt in prison for merely being a sex offender; rather they have done something to make the other inmates angry and they then use the sex offender status as an excuse to attack him.

If these young men are careful, keep a low profile, and act respectful most of them will do well. But at a higher security---a medium or a maximum---a cover story is imperative.
