One reason that prisons are such terrible places to exist is that the COs and many of the staff are nothing but degenerates and no better than the inmates. In fact, some even provoke the inmates and then the problems begin.
There is no goodness in prison. In normal life, you and I might have a bad day, but we can look forward to watching our favorite football game on Monday Night Football, eating a nice meal, or just enjoying the company of someone we love. There are no nice football games, decent meals, or anyone to love in prison. Prison offers nothing.
An inmate has to learn to make his own happiness to thrive in prison.
An inmate rarely sees anything positive in prison. Everything is seen with a negative slant.
When a man is subjected to nothing but negativity and sees no goodness from anyone for years, it is easy to understand how they fail when they are released into society.
There is no rehabilitation in prison, either, which is one of the biggest mistakes I see in our prison system.
Prison does not rehabilitate. An inmate rehabilitates himself, if he is wise.
Some COs are decent, but the decent ones never last long. Most COs are just trash. Many are bullies and get a kick out of treating inmates badly.

Many times I have said I did not have a tough time in prison, and compared to some other inmates, I didn't. But after reading the quote in the preceding paragraph, I looked back on the days in the cell and I have to admit, that yeah, it was a pretty bad place at times.
Good article. Too bad that so many do not care about the conditions of prison or the inmates housed there.
